I believe the slave codes were a fundamental part of the story in helping readers better understand the era and plot of the story, as well as enabling them to better understand how people used to think and justify their actions toward other people. I believe they were an integral part of the story.

Slave Codes in the book helped me to better understand the time period, the spirit of the era and the treatment that the slaves went through. I think Slave Codes helped slave owners justify their actions. I believe it is good that The Codes are included in the book.

Nothing justifies the action of the inhumane and callous treatments that were meted out in slaves during the period and the codes certainly did not reduce this repulsion by offering any justification.

Slave codes, in my opinion, are necessary for this book since they not only make the periods easier to grasp, but they also show us the psyche of those who torment their captives. It also demonstrates how out of the ordinary Lily and James' relationship is in their culture.

The addition of slave codes was brilliant. Adding a slave code at the beginning of every chapter gave more insight into what was going on in that chapter.

I found the slave codes to be extremely helpful. I also found them to be relevantly placed given the nature of the chapters they proceeded. I have studied that era. I think we all have in school. However, there were codes listed I did not know about, and I believe it helped the book. Do i think they could have been taken out? Maybe. However, I think some of the actions would have been lost.

To me, the slave codes are meant to be part of the book or else the book would have been less meaningful. The slave code enhanced better understanding of the book.

I have once encountered a book that constituted a comparable code. Having said that, these codes are no longer alien to me. It helped me peruse the book with an in-depth understanding of the story.

Anything that would make people understand the book better was better for the book and the reader not to misunderstand the real intent of the writer.

Although I had some previous knowledge about the treatment of slaves back then, the inclusion of the slave codes certainly provided more clarity for the events in the book.

Adding the slave codes at the beginning of the chapters was very thoughtful of the author. Apart from enabling me to understand why the slave-masters were acting the way they were doing, the codes also kind of prepared me for what was coming in following the chapters. Therefore, I believe adding the codes was necessary to help readers understand this book better, including those who are not familiar with the slave history.

I appreciate that it was included. I agree that it gave light to how and why Lily and James and the other characters do or act on certain parts of the story. It gave a good back story to readers who are not familiar with the slave era.

Yeah, the codes were awesome. And it did made the book lovely to read. I could track the history and the events of how it happened.

In my opinion, there is no way the book would make sense if the code was left out. The code gives me a good understanding of why they did what they did and also helps me and it also helps me understand the time period better.

The slaves codes quite interesting. It added more meaning to the book and helped readers understand why slaves were treated so harshly.
