Slave Codes

Post by Bertha Jackson »

Did the Slave Codes in the book help you understand the time period better? I thought the inclusion of these codes helped me understand the treatment that the slaves endured better. They were the only way I could make sense of why anyone would treat another human being the way they did. The Codes helped them justify their actions. Do you agree? Or do you think they could have been left out of the book?

I believe that the slave codes were quite essential for this book. Without them, the reasonings for the way slaves were treated would have been somewhat nebulous to me. The codes offered valuable insight.

I agree! I believe the slave codes were essential to the book. I don't think I would have understood a lot of the story without them. Great question!

I believe that this book needs slave codes because it not only makes it easy to understand the periods, but also shows us the mentality of the people who torture their slaves. It also shows how much the relationship between Lily and James is odd according to their society.

Yes, indeed it helped me to understand more about why they did that to the slaves. I agree that these explanations can make sense to our minds.

Honestly, I found the slave codes totally confusing and hard to understand. In my opinion, they could have been left out of the book and it would have been fine.

I do think they helped. Lik you, I had trouble understanding the concept of owning another human being. From these codes I learned some of the “rules” and how owners could justify their actions.

The slave codes made great examples of some of the unreasonable laws that slaves were subjected to. I also found those that were thought to aid or engage in a relationship with a slave were treated almost as cruelly.

The author used Slave codes to explain the restrictions imposed on slaves, such as the fact that slaves could not leave their owner's grounds without permission.

From the novel, I was able to understand that slaves had minimal legal rights. Their testimony in court was inadmissible in any case involving whites; they couldn't establish contracts or possess property.

The slave codes were essential to help readers better understand the time that the story took place, as well as to help them better comprehend how people used to think and why they thought it was okay to treat others differently. I believe they were an essential part of the book and story.

It was necessary to add the slave code. It added more depth and understanding in the plot. Kind of explaining the time better.
