As much as both of them can preserve their relationship, they can move heaven and earth to protect it. Yes, it’s apparent throughout. James and Lily's relationship was affected by the slave code and the society and this particular societal restraint halt them in many ways.

I think it would affect James more because he has to condescend to Lily's status. Therefore, his inhibitions are understandable.

The slave code and the society Lily and James were in definitely affected their relationship. From having to make their relationship clandestine for fear of what others would think of them. This strained their relationship.

The slave code and society definitely impacted their relationship. The fact that they had to hide their relationship shows the effect of the slave code and society on it. He couldn't even be open about his feelings for her while in his father's house. So, their relationship was definitely impacted by the slave code and society.

Except you live in a vacuum, the influence of society must affect your relationship with people. Lily and James were brave enough to go against the grain. Passion was key. They cared about society, but they couldn't care less. lol

Yes it's true James was raised differently than Lily was, and yes its true, that society can, and I repeat can have a forbearance on a relationship such as theirs, but if its not broadcasted as in same/same race marriages in that era, can it not go on unnoticed as in, here's an example, Thomas Jefferson's relationship? If one puts it out there it will or can get noticed, but if one keeps themselves private, it should not be so easily discoverable. And within that time, their mindset can eventually change or adapt to the needs and wants of their relationship to one another. I feel strongly reading of relationships of the past, that if there's a will, there's a way, and love will prevail, 'til death do you part.'

Lily and James did not have a free relationship. It was definitely being strained by the slave code which made it very complicated.

Evidently, James and Lily's relationship was affected by society. I mean how could it not be? From the slave code to the disapprovement of the society. They could only love in secret.

I believe the slave codes and the society affected James and Lily's relationship. As much as they loved each other, they both know the wall that separated the master and slaves as per the slave codes and had to be discreet often so as not to face the judgmental eyes of the society and the repercussions, more so to Lily.

The people we become as adults are heavily influenced by our upbringing. James is in a similar situation. Because of the milieu in which he grew up, he has difficulty expressing his emotions. He wasn't a horrible person, but he had to conform to society's demands. Instead of putting his feelings and connection first, he was too concerned about what other people thought of his relationship with Lily. Their connection and affection was evident, yet due to the slavery code, they kept inadvertently hurting each other.

Yes, society affected their relationship. Their relationship was shadowed in secrecy, and they were afraid of being caught. For example when Lily told James that he should treat her as a slave. Also, they were brought up differently. This had affected their mindset and how they treated each other.

The slave code and culture had an impact on James and Lily's relationship. James' upbringing and society's treatment of the "slave" made it difficult for him to be honest about his emotions for Lily.

It definitely affected their relationship. The upbringing James had and the way the society viewed slave code it was difficult for them to be open about their relationship.

James and Lily's relationship was affected by the slave code and society. They have a forbidden love that has to be hidden and protected from the rest of the world around them. The slave code and society make James and Lilly's love forbidden.
