It definitely affected them, especially when everyone kept reminding them they were master and slave. But when the others saw how much the two of them influenced each other, they realised that not even slave codes and society rules could stop two people who love each other from going towards what they wanted.

James and Lily's relationship where very much affected by the society around them and the slave code, as they both had different upbringing and that fact can't be ignored.

I simply believe that James' background and society's treatment of slaves made it difficult for him to be upfront about his feelings for Lily. I still believe he adored her fully, but there was pressure on him that he feared and hated in some way.

I knew society would not accept love between a slave and her master, so I was not surprised to see that society influenced their relationship right from the start, which left James and Lily constricted to hiding their relationship from everyone.

I 100% believe that their relationship was affected by the slave code. Of course. The way James would be kind of two faced to Lily shows that society definitely had a great impact on their relationship. It is not easy being an interracial couple now in our society so you can imagine how it was then.

Obviously James and Lily's relationship was affected by the society and slave code. Environment and upbringing places a major role in the characters of its individual. For example, because of James upbringing, he was less expressive of his emotions with Lily. So yes, I do believe the society had a constrain on the relationship.

Society provides the rules that men live by. The struggle to accept what is and make appropriate adjustments is obvious either by living according to set norms or by changing these societal values. And this we see as the plot unfolds.

Humans are social beings and it would be strange if their relationship was not affected by the societal codes prevalent. Therefore, James and Lily's relationship was influenced by the slave codes and it's understandable.

Society is what defines a person's character. Norms are so ingrained in us that we don't know we are acting on them. In James, it limited his expression of his feelings for Lily. Lily seemed to be affected less and she was more courageous.

James and Lily's relationship was definitely affected due to the slave code and society, and it was not at all surprising. Them constantly hurting each other is proof of how much impact it had on them. It was not surprising that the societal pressure made them do that to each other.

I think the slave code and society affected their relationship. They had to keep their relationship hidden and away from people's eyes. Their upbringings also made it so that they didn't understand each other.

I think that's a given. Their relationship was affected by society/slave code, unfortunately. They did push the boundaries of societal expectations but really had to take the brunt of it. I think Lily took more than James, of course. Her being not only a slave, but a woman. It's like no matter, society's judgment was after her.

Society and the slave code definitely affected their relationship. It made the relationship difficult for both of them. It made Lily have a hard time trusting James and made him afraid to show his feelings for her.

Any relationship is affected by the upbringing of the individuals in that relation. Here, it's no different. There is a strain in the relationship because of this different upbringing of both of them and the society standards.
