Love sometimes cannot stand the pressure. If James is not able to overcome the pressure of the society then love might never happen. Maybe James can never really love Lily, can not give his whole heart to her. If I was James then I might have succumb to the pressure.

Yes, I think that James loves Lily. Unfortunately, he is aware of all the pressures and demands of society. Because he has gone up witnessing each of them, especially the discrimination.

Confusion over his feelings for her must have clouded his judgement sometimes while with her. But I believe with time he will open up fully and let love lead.

As I got it, James really loved Lily. However, they didn't live on a some desert island. Their society was strange, abnormal and sick. Therefore, their relationship was a little strange too. But James clearly cared about Lily.

Shuning all external negativity that could taint one's love life is the first and most important step in being able to love someone successfully. Although it is possible, James here wouldn't amount to much when it comes to loving Lily, and they would face their own setbacks because of the strain that society as a whole continues to exert on them.

Yes, I think James really loves Lily but it's complicated for him due to the society standards.
