To me I think James can love Lily with all his heart. However, due to the situation he finds himself, he may not be able to make it public.

It will be very difficult. But I feel that if he could love her, truly and honestly, he would have given his best already; society- no society.
But if we're talking alternative universe, sure.

I believe James can love Lily. From the look of things, society is what is influencing James. Their love will grow better if they elope to Europe.

I think James would find it difficult. Throughout the book you can easily pick up that he was scared and ashamed of their relationship. I think Lily deserves better; I’m mad at James.

I totally believe that James can actually love Lilly full with all his heart, but it's going to be a very tough decision considering the pressure of society and all. Either they elope to Europe as planned or James stands up for love and faces the society head-on.

I think he loved her, but no matter how much society will always play a part in his decisions and actions. It’s all about how his love for her will make him act when society demands they grow apart.

I think James can love Lily completely but their relationship is complicated. If James wants to love or show his love completely, then he should fight against societal pressures and both internal and external forces that tends to pull them apart.

After reading the novel, I seemed to have the feeling that James adored Lily. Despite the fact that they were split by the roles assigned by society, there was undeniable social pressure. However, I could recognise James' affection for Lily occasionally. :))

Even though the relationship between Lily and James is a bit complicated, I still believe James has the capabilities to love Lily wholeheartedly despite the pressures of society.

I think James does love Lily, but it's his version of love. He hides things from her and treats her as his property in order to protect her from the consequences of loving her in a world where their love is forbidden. I also hope that they are able to flee to Europe so that James won't have to hide his love for Lily anymore.

I think he could but he needs to let go of caring about what others think about him. If he honestly wanted to love Lily with all his heart he would. He just needs to be brave.

I truely believe James can truly love Lily. Actually he does but just based on his upbringing which had a major role in his character development made it difficult for James true emotion to be showed. The relationship was really complicated but this I can say was due to their upbringings and not that James does not love Lily.

James might have set off to prove his honest intentions to Lily. But in the long run, I doubt that he would continually love because of the already defined social values which will invariably strain the relationship.

Love based on possessing the other partner cannot last long hence their love can be shaky later

I think that James love for Lily will eventually give him the necessary strength to not cower to societal pressures that make their relationship seem impossible.
