Maybe it was only to create suspense or to make each other think about different characters that could have died.

The suspense in the book was nice. I think Lily was shot and I'm pretty sure she survived it.

Most likely, this scene appeared in the novel to encourage readers to buy and read the possible sequel in the future.
It's unlikely that Lily was the victim. After all, she is the main protagonist. It was probably some kind of brave, disobedient slave. Perhaps this shot has something to do with the mysterious "ghostly white robes and sheathed faces".
