Although this is common practise during the slave era, it is nonetheless inhumane. Lily's lord was greedy and cruel to have sold her at that age.

Personally, I think his wife had something to do with why Lily
was sold. It was par for the time though. I was heartbroken when Lily was sold

That's the general idea of slavery don't you think. Her value must have glittered to them and thus she was taken.

During slavery era, masters could do anything they pleased with their subjects, including exchanging them for monetary gain. There was nothing the slaves could do, except watch helplessly.

Lily is strongly torn from her mother's arms and sold at a negro closeout by her Lord to make money. It only demonstrates man's desire for achievements and fulfillments in life and the rat race involved in this process in the elite class of the society. It enlightens the readers and makes them aware of the harsh realities of the slave tradition in history.

The author is merely attempting to make her appear far more powerful than she is. When Lily was sold as if she were an object rather than a real being, I was sad.

It's sad what they did to lily. even if the lord discovered that lily had a fair with his son.selling lily was not an option. I feel pity to his mother who was certain that lily will be okay.

Slaves were considered property that can be traded at will by their masters. As a slave's daughter, Lily was a slave by extension. I think the scene served to demonstrate the brutality of Lily's reality.

Lily's character is portrayed as a strong woman forged through adversity and brutality. She became a strong person despite having a difficult life. When she was strongly torn from her mother and sold as nothing more than a chattel, the readers get a sense of the struggle she endured.

I was so enthralled with Book 1 that read Books 2 and 3 in the next 48 hours. Not a spoiler, but the real reason is revealed in the last book.

Lily was taken from her mother's arms because enslaved people's children were considered the master's property at the time. The children were either committed to slavery by the master or sold to other masters as enslaved individuals.

Because Lily is only a thing; a property to their slave master. And by her status, she is prone to be sold out or sexually abused at will. The same thing is seen in Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin. It's heartbreaking to remember this aspect of humanity's dark history.

The slave was for the master. Lily being the property of the slave definitely she was a property of the masters. After getting matured enough to work the slave children would be sold by the masters or exchanged with something else. Terrible

That was the norm then, as the children of slaves were seen as the master's property, and he could do trade them off for money if he so pleased.

To be honest, I feel her master was a self-centered man who was always seeking for ways to gain money, considering his lack of concern for her young age.
