When I started reading this book I did not know the story was from a series. I think the killer and whale story at the beginning was nice referring to the other books, but I guess this book can stand alone

The killer and the whale story that is told at the beginning of the book expresses the origin, tradition and history of the native people. This story is contained in the other two books of the series. Sheldon includes it in Totem because the book is supposed to function as a standalone novel, even though it is part of a book series.

The killer and the whale story is told in the other two books of the series
The story is told in Totem so as to inform those that have not read the other books about the origin of the Northern people.

I actually really like the whale story in the beginning of Totem. It is an interesting way to start off the book to introduce Native American folklore and I also did not know it was taken from an earlier book. Personally, I enjoyed Totem so much as a standalone book and I can see reflections of the whale story throughout the entirety of the novel which speaks to the literary expertise of the author.

Yes, I am aware that Myra told Sarah a story at the beginning of Totem. I still believe the trilogy to be a single book, despite Strong Heart being compared to it. I believe the tale illuminates the history of the North.

Given that I've read the series' earlier novels, it's interesting to learn that Totem stands alone. This one is also quite fascinating and captivating.

I read both the first and this book. Adrift will be read soon. I believe I comprehend; that was yet another connecting element. Each of the stories can stand on its own, but when they are combined, a bigger image emerges. The first book's story didn't feel incomplete, but as it was developed more in book three, it gained depth. I'm looking forward to seeing how Adrift connects everything.

I haven't read the first book so I am not clear on the story of the whale from the previous book.
