In this story, racism abounds. However there is so much more. Being in a Country where the hosts are less negative towards you in spite of your aggressive role. Feeling that you can contribute from a distance to the civil strife. I mean, the American army did not discriminate at recruitment. Trying to make yourself relevant and be a team. Plotting for the future that includes equality. Above all, that oppressed people can easily unite with the whites to fight a common enemy.

Friendship was another major theme that I saw in the book. I understand that no body is an island and nobody should aspire to be one. This theme proved that we need to surround ourselves with good friends, not just ordinary friends who may not care much for us.

Well said, however, this book dives into much more beyond racism. One bit I noticed is friendship. I love the emotional aspect of this book and how the author was able to use his expertise to portray these things. Touche!

While there are the major themes of discrimination, racism and injustice, the ones that I was personally engrossed by were the themes of honor, friendship and empathy.

Beyond the racism theme portrayed by the author, I think the book also talked about social integration and cohesion which was at the centre of the war. For example, learning the language of the locals.

Friendship, acceptance, and unity were among the things I witnessed. The Vietnamese and black soldiers united pretty well because he understood their language.

Racism, Adaptability, Acceptance of self, Empathy and Apathy come to mind. Moreover, there is fear, and Survival in difficult situations like during war. Perhaps one is forced to do a bit of soul searching. Do you even believe in the cause for which you fight? Nationalism, but for who? Yourself or circumstances beyond you? Reading this book, I grapple with these themes. Yet you must practice obedience and loyalty. Is there Equality, or must one resort to Individualism? For me, in the end, you must balance the equation, but is that even feasible?

Friendship, companionship and inequality are also recurrent themes alongside racism.

I think I appreciated the theme of unity and maybe acceptance if I should add. The author showed the importance of unity and love. I also noticed the theme of racism.

I really enjoyed the way the themes of camaraderie and loyalty were presented in the novel. Yes, they are easy to overlook as racism is the most prevalent ideology as highlighted by the author, but the previously listed themes made this a book worth reading.

The theme of racism is the prevailing theme, but also friendship and sympathy are there. It was great that the author learned Vietnamese language which led to better communication and understanding.

The themes of friendship and companionship are very noticeable throughout the book. I love that the book addresses issues which are prominent in today's society especially that of racism. The book teaches that friendship is important and that man needs companionship to survive.

On the positive side, I observe camaraderie and a sense of togetherness. The warfare may be vicious, but I was amazed by how some characters create an unconditional tie. This is in particular to the soldiers between some civilians.

Companionship, I'd say. During a time of war, the immediate thoughts that will come to mind are cruel and ruthless. But there's also the friendship and acceptance shown despite the difficult time it is.
