I think the most unique feature of this book when compared to all the other pirate books, is that the pirate were trafficking slaves. Most other pirates books are filled with pirates that are out for treasure.

When I started reading this book I expected it to be about pirates on a ship with people fighting constantly. But, the author brings the story on shore and allows us to see the true people behind the pirate facade. The romance was something I wasn’t expecting. Instead of just action and adventure this pirate book had much more hidden within the story.

I don't have enough experience with pirate stories, but most are about treasure hunts, raids, quests, and bounty. Reading about slavery and historical fiction is quite unique.

To me, what sets this book apart from other pirate books is the fact that it has a very strong female protagonist. I'm tired of reading Pirate books that portray women as damsels in distress. Our protagonist was in distress alright, but she can very well be called her own prince charming.

I haven’t read a lot of pirate books but in the ones I’ve read, female pirates were not a thing.

The book is different because the author is not shy to explore topics like slavery which serves as an eye-opener.

My review for this book started with "Real life pirates of the Caribbean? Yes, please!", because it was refreshing to read something historically accurate about pirates. I enjoy all kinds of pirate stories, even the over-the-top stereotypical ones, but this was a breath of fresh air. No parrots, no silly pirate slang, and no rum

I highly enjoyed the fact that one of the main points in this book was slave trade. I do not have anything to compare this book too other then the pirates of the Caribbean movies. This was the first pirate book I ever read, but it set a high standard for others I may come across in the future.

This book is different from other pirate book I have read. Most pirates book uses male as the main character,but this book is different.Also, pirates don't look to me as people who travel with their family on their ship. The happenings in this book changed this thought.

I haven't read a lot of books with pirates as the main topic. Only one comes to mind that I read last year that I did not enjoy and I can't remember the name. This was definitely more enjoyable and had a complex cast of characters.

I think the story definitely turns a typical "pirate" image on its head, as both in fiction and history we have come to view pirates as rouged, older men.

I was actually surprised reading that the pirates associated with slave trafficking..
have never had of any pirates story about it and lastly i'm used to men being the hero, but in this case it was a different story.

In pirate books, you rarely hear about women on pirate ships let alone a family. Pirates are mainly depicted as free roamers, criminals, and cast-outs. I think that's what I liked the most about the book.
