The antagonists seem weak, I expect so much of them in the book but I think that is how the author wants it to be.

Lomoche had been cast in a bad shadow from the get go. He was good as dead but was spared by Scarlett mistress. I see him as ineffectual.

I did find the antagonist to be a bit of a letdown. I think it would have been more interesting to make him a secret mastermind, more of a puppeteer behind the whole thing, rather than having him physical fight and get beat so easily. Instead, he hardly seemed like a threat and didn't add much tension to the story.

He thought of himself as better than everyone else, but it was all in his head. Once push came to shove and he lost, he couldn't believe it either since he never imagined it would happen.
I agree, he wasn't oriented as to what reality was right from the beginning and this led to the creation of a weak and slightly silly villain. Don Lomoche could have been a better villain though, the author could have done better in this regard.

The character was weak, but I did live knew thing about him that can be found in most villains; let others do your dirty work.

I didn't mind that Lomoche was largely incompetent because I viewed him as more of a "cog" in the larger villain machine. I thought his ruthlessness made him interesting, even if his competency left something to be desired.

I agree; Lomoche was weak and easy to despise. His insanity worked against him, but fit his character. I thought the antagonistic force (slavery and human trafficking) was more destructive and haunting. Slavery is vile and demeaning, so I appreciated how the author gave strength to the protagonists and used them to oppose slavery through abolitionism. It was encouraging to see them speak about human equality. I also valued how they treated the natives living in the Maroons and the successful efforts when Captain Joshua's military men and Naseem's warriors worked together to combat the real enemy.

In my opinion, the author did a bad job in the characterization of the antagonist, Don Lomoche. I understand that drunkenness is a feature in pirate stories.

Don Lomoche seemed vulnerable I think the writer should at least make him tougher.

Okay, your comment makes me laugh. Sorry, Don. But, yeah, he does seem rather incompetent as a villain. He probably should've learned a thing or two from Zhang Yong or something.

Absolutely, the author could have portrayed a better villain in Don Lomoche's character. He wasn't convincing enough to me.

Although the antagonist appears week from reader's point of view as the reader wants a challenging and adventurous battle between protoganist and antagonist. But from author's point, the antagonist character has been build to be a week character who just uses others to fight the game and is not very capable himself.

I wouldn't say he was weak more like an annoying character than a weakling.

I expect the villain to add thrills to the novel, but I was disappointed at the end. He wasn't even worth someone's time!
