The biggest theme I noticed throughout the book was camaraderie/mentorship. It's there in the way Zhang mentored Brandy opposite her mother, the way Brandy and John were always watching out for Davonte and Ralphie, and the way the captains treated their crew.

I found the theme of perseverance. Brandy undergoes incredible adversity but remains steadfast.

The novel chronicles the decisions and events that a teenage girl must face in a world that "belongs" to men, which is a noteworthy theme in this book. Such strong female characters enlighten readers' imaginations and make us ponder what a lady goes through nowadays.

I think this book serves as a powerful reminder that we shouldn't let our challenges define us. Brandy was raised to be a pirate, but she chose to join John Edwards. She knew who she was, and she was strong enough to let that shine through.

The major theme- betrayal, it is a painful fact that we can't do away with. But in stories it really opens our eyes to the fact that it is not everyone we can trust with a secrets about ourselves

Revenge was a big one for this book. I feel like self-preservation was another one. Brandy had to work on herself to become better then her parents.

I think the contrasting themes of loyalty and overcoming betrayal are extremely present in this book.
