Forgiveness is a theme that was discussed when Ben and Elise decided to forgive Captain Joshua for something that they thought he did. Davonte was a good character because she forgave Ben and Elise for not telling her who her father was and she gave that same grace to Brandy due to her father's actions.

The first theme we come across is family love and family bond. Then comes betrayal, loyalty, self-sacrifice, survival and slavery, romance, hope and faith.

The author mainly focused on betrayal which is expected in a book about pirates where money and power are the main motivations. I did notice other themes though such as; romance, religion, sacrifice and loyalty.

Sacrifice is one thing that comes with deep reflection and consideration. One has to abandon a lot to do it. This book seems to have this theme on point, SACRIFICE.

Betrayal is the most important theme I would associate with Brandy.

One theme I cannot stop thinking about is perseverance. Brandy did not know how to give up. She went through a lot, but she refused to stop going after what she truly wanted.

If she were a real han, I would seriously consider making her my role model

The theme of betrayal stood prominent in the book. Other themes like family, love, slavery, and revenge are seen in the book.

There are several themes in this book, but my favorite is sacrifice. Brandy's mother sacrificed herself for her daughter, demonstrating the mother's love and demonstrating that a mother can do anything for her child's well-being.

Apart from betrayal, the book also contains themes of slavery, love, friendship, and most importantly, loyalty. That's what appealed to me the most.

It was obvious that betrayal is the main theme, but reading through some replies here was mindblowing. I didn't think about some of the themes that the others have mentioned. Really gives a different perspective to the book!

Apart from betrayal like you indicated, we could also see the display of slavery, love, family, and even war.

Anti-racism is definitely a huge one. I am certain that at least part of the reason for Hendrickson's inclusion of Davonte was because he wanted to highlight what discrimination looked like in that time period.
