The passing of Brandy's mother was the most heartbreaking incident in this novel. Brandy's mother's selfless act of saving her daughter demonstrates how devotedly she loves her.

Even though Brandy's mum was violent and wicked in her own way, her death hurt my heart. I should not have, but I cried.

The most heart-touching event in this book for me was near the end when Brandy gave her mother's medallion to John. The medallion symbolized the love her mother had for her, which makes the medallion even more special. I really loved that the medallion Brandy's mother had was given to John, and the medallion John's mother had was given to Brandy.

I felt the most emotional when Brandy's mother died. Seeing your parent die really does something to you.

Brandy's mother's sacrifice was it for me. My eyes got moist. It was a full circle and redeeming moment for her. I loved it.

The passage in this novel that affected me the most and caused me to cry was when Captain Joshua defended young Davonte from the visiting sailor's harassment. It was an act of bravery and love that transcended racial boundaries.

Kate's death was what made me emotional. She didn't think it twice before sacrificing her life to save her child. This is heroic for me.

When Brand's mother gave her life to protect her daughter, that scene really moved me. She had no regard for herself and simply wanted to protect her lovely daughter. It demonstrates how enduring a mother's love is.

Her mother's murder in front of her is what gets to me. When I reflect back on that, I still get hurt.

The murder that took their mother's life was for me the most terrible incident. I experienced the numbness that comes with losing a loved one.

To lose a parent is a major traumatic event in one's life. To witness your mother's death with her own hand, I can't quite fathom what that does to a person. That was the most touching scene I felt in the novel.
