I agree that the antagonist was more like a joke, and that annoyed me so much, but maybe this is how the author wanted to be.

I think that, when you look deeply at it, the incompetence of the Don Lomoche when it comes to scrapping makes sense. For 15+ years he was no longer an "active" pirate in the sense of the world, just a lazy fool drunk on power giving orders around. His edge dulled.

I wanted the villain was more powerful than the author made him out to be. As much as I wanted the retribution to happen, it was too rapid and didn't add to the book's realism.

Don Lomoche had his day in the opening scene on that ship. I always knew he stood no chance after that and was surprised he lasted that long. I couldn't hide my hate for his character.

The villain, Don lomoche is a feeble and ineffective drunkard. His character was not an impressive villain. I think the author used him for some level of comic relief.

I do not consider don lomoche to be incompetent. He might not be physically strong, but he is a master manipulator who knows how to use people to achieve his evil goal.

I expected the antagonists would be more cunning and clever for a pirate book. However, how the author portrayed them makes the story different from most books about adventure and pirates.

I found Don Lomoche really funny. I knew John Edwards would be his undoing. That was predictable.

Lomoche is a bit of a dandy and not a serious antagonist. As with many of the other characters, he was also a bit of a stereotype, and indeed, he was a one-sided character lacking any depth. If the author had provided more of a background into the character, perhaps he would have been more identifiable and his actions, or lack of action, more understandable.

I think his character as a villain is quite ironic and humorous. He has no backbone whatsoever and cannot stand his ground.

I would angry that, this character disappointed a lot of people as we expected much more than what we got. The character development was too poor.

I never worried that Lomoche would win when he attacked the Maroons, and I thought it unthinkable that John Edwards' side would lose so few soldiers save Hind. I agree that Lomoche was not a particularly powerful villain.

Don was really weak. But he definitely fit the story.

I think the villain was written quite aptly. Isn't it the case that people sometimes overestimate their own competence, strength and villainy when in reality they are incompetent and are able to sometimes fool others about who they really are

The thing about Don was that he was never meant to be the main villain. He was just a minion who was being worked by Governor Bennett to do all his dirty work. I think the author wanted characters like Brandy and Skinner to think Don is the main bad guy because he betrayed them when in actuality, he was working for someone more powerful behind the scenes.
