It had strong female characters that commanded respect from their pirate brethren. This was not because of their affiliation with a string male pirate. This is what makes it different to me.

The book has its ups and downs. The issue of the slave trade was something I really liked. A woman being the captain of a ferocious ship was uncommon and Brandy being the main protagonist was a refreshing change. Brandy and her mother were both my favorite.

This book is different for three main reasons.

1. It had a strong female character.
2. This character did not draw here strength from any man.
3. It put slavery and piracy in the same plot. Other pirate books always talk about pirate stealing gold and precious things from ships. This one went a bit further.

What really made this pirate story stand out among all of the others was the way that Hendrickson brought in multiple characters, with multiple different backgrounds, who each had time to show the events of the story through their point of view. And with these different backgrounds we were able to see different themes woven into the main pirate genre. This book really looked into multiple types of people around the world during this time and brought them together into a new type of pirate story. We, as the readers, were able to see the events of the story through their eyes instead of the traditional first-person point of view that most pirate stories are told from.

I was surprised that slave trafficking was possible business venture among pirates. I always thought of that fable life of pirates which always revolved around treasure hunting and adventure.

Most pirate tales I've read involved the smugglers transporting illegal weapons or drugs. The pirates in this book, however, were engaged in the slave trade. That struck me as being special.

The only difference was that the main pirates died. Aside from that, it was just like every pirate story out there.

Definitely the portrayal of female pirate leaders. That was unique.

I must admit that the majority of pirate tales I have read about included the smugglers of illegal weapons or drugs. The pirates in this book, however, were engaged in the slave trade. I thought that was unusual.

There are two things I observed in this book that make it different from other pirate books. Number one is the way females took charge of the ship and the slave trade carried out on the ship

A few elements made this pirate tale unique from others. The other pirates respected Brandy's mother greatly and gave her a lot of respect, not because of her husband but rather because of who she was. The mention of a woman on a pirate ship is also unique, and no family has ever been reported to be aboard a pirate ship. The slave trade is discussed in this book. Additionally, the story describes life in a port city.

I don't have a lot of experience with pirate novels, but I assume you don't think of them as historical documents very often.
