The award for best supporting character goes to...

Post by Erin Dydek »

Ralphie showed bravery in the face of the fiercest battles. Devonte encouraged Brandy to open her heart to John. Skinner stayed loyal to Brandy and took care of her after her parents died. But who was your favorite supporting character?

My favorite was Zhang Yong. I loved the fighting style he brought to the mix and how his lessons in patience and balance helped to develop Brandy into a true Pirate Princess. His knowledge of medicine and his musical talents also added to the depth of his character and made him an excellent addition to the book. I don't think Brandy would have been able to use her mother's vengeful fighting style to conquer her enemies. How would the book be different without the transformation he helped initiate? What was your favorite thing about Zhang?

My choice is easily Brandy. I enjoyed her development and story arc. Other people who impressed me were Ralphie and Zhang Yong.

Zhang’s dedication to helping Brandy find balance and become a very good fighter and be able to keep her loved ones safe was my favorite thing about him. He added a lot to the story. I also really liked Ralphie. He was such a loyal and hard working friend to John. He was always full of love and support. He was a great character.

Zhang was definitely my favorite supporting character too. His inner peace and calm demeanor helps Brandy throughout the book. His fighting tactics are respectful yet incredibly effective. His patience while training Brandy allowed her to develop and grow on her own time not be forced.

Zhang is a off course a strong character full of motivation and inspiration for Brandy but I think Skinner was also very important in building up Brandy's character as he took care of her after the death of her parents.

Captain Joshua was my favorite. He seems to always do things according to his conscience. Even when that keeps him from doing things he’d rather do.

Brandy is the best character for me. In addition to breaking stereotypes, and creating strong character in unusual situations, she is also helpful and supportive.

Zhang Yong was a very important supporting character because he taught Brandy some of the eastern disciplines of fighting. She was hiding her identity and certainly didn't want to be discovered as the daughter of The Plague and the Scarlett Mistress. Zhang Yong helped Brandy temper her pure aggressive style of fighting with a more zen but equally effective approach. For example, Brandy's training with the Chinese fan. Also, the introduction of acupuncture and herbal healing was an unexpected element in the book.
