I think real freedom comes from mastering yourself. Because the minute you discover your true self and master all that you are, then you are free to make healthy decisions, think positively and remain optimistic throughout life.

I agree with the quote that one cannot be truly free unless he is a master of himself because inner work needs to be achieved in order to have mastered our life. Once the inner self is in balance then we can decide what kind of life we choose to live either have a regular job, or freelance. As long as this choice comes from our inner self and not as a consequence of an external reaction, then we are truly free.

I think that the saying is completely true. If I ne is not the master of oneself or his mum nd. Then he will very easily be distracted by the outer world. And becomes the slave of own thoughts.

Not at all .man will still be living in the illusion far from reality if he does not have control over his mind.

I think Robert Obikanyi (the starter of this topic) has not considered other reasons why someone may freelance. It is also possible that someone might come from a financially well-off family and doesn't need to work for a company on a contract basis. Or someone may freelance as a side thing (apart from having a day job.)
For example, let us take ourselves. As book reviewers on this site, we don't get paid on a salary or contract basis. People reviewing books for this site as just freelancers. Most probably, either they belong to privileged families or already have a day job and do this as a side thing.

Can a man be free if he is not yet a master of himself?
A great question. But will man ever master himself? Should we ask rather, whether a man can be contented knowing that he may never master himself? Life is a whirlwind, and it takes great mastery to conquer oneself, if that's possible. How do we fully separate ourselves from the emotions and circumstances that permeates our spaces? I have wondered often if self mastery is even possible. I see this in the stories of the monks, but can the average human being that has goals and dreams and responsibilities, that are not isolated like these monks be capable of that level of mastery?
I believe that our true freedom comes from contentment and acceptance rather than mastery.

Freedom is what every man wants and enjoys, as a human why would I decide to work under someone when I can get a job easily online, do the job wherever and whenever I want, my time is controlled myself and only I can decide to do a job or not and all the money I earned belongs to me. Certainly, everyone knows what to pick when it comes to doing things according to your choice or working daily under a boss, doing many things at the end of the day yet at the end getting a paycheck that wouldn't be enough for your day-to-day affairs. Furthermore, a work that wouldn't even let you or hardly let you have time for yourself

Everyone wants a simple and profiting life!

When we say that man chooses himself, we do mean that, every one of us must choose himself, but by that we also mean that in choosing for himself he chooses for all men. For in effect of all action a man may take in order to create himself as he wills to be, there is not which is not creative, at the same time, of an image of man such as he believe he ought to be. To choose between this or that is at the same time to affirm the value of that which is chosen; for we are unable ever to choose the worse. What we choose is is always the better; and nothing can be better for us unless it is better for all. Our responsibility is thus much greater than we had supposed, for it concerns mankind as a whole.

Virtually every one wants to be served. Very few populations may want to serve, and that is the reason why people keep being self employed

This thought crossed my mind when I did my final paper in school, I always thought school was a prison but turns out work is an even bigger prison. I'm a believer in the freedom to make decisions about my own timelines and do whatever I feel is right at whatever time.

this topic is very interesting, yes a man cant be free if h does not accomplish free will ( success) to become a master of himself. Here, man refers to both genders who are only not obliged to make decisions on their own but depends on others for survival, if one is very dependant on others for survival, one cant accomplish anything unless one becomes self discipline to make life worthwhile for him or herself. in the era of technology it has made it easier for anyone to take hold of the available opportunities that IT is prevailing to better him or herself to gain mastery of oneself. this can come about as a result of building oneself esteem, online education, skills development and harnessing the internet in building ones skills. when one has accomplished his or her goals and gained knowledge, skills, creativity etc, one becomes a master of himself.

Employers, most often than not are the issue. They treat their staffs like trash. A well to do freelancer doesn’t have to worry about financial insecurity. And about the quote, being free, for me, it’s knowing what you can take and what’s beyond you.

Speaking as a freelancer myself, and as someone who has many friends and family who are freelancers as well, the choice to leave the workplace in favor of freelancing has nothing to do with an aversion to working for someone else. It's all about the freedom to do the work you want, when you want to do it. There are lots of opportunities to pursue a career in freelancing that you can't pursue in the traditional workplace as well. Remember, you still have "employers" as a freelancer, the people we usually call clients; they're just short-term employers for the most part. Also, the supposed widespread financial struggles of freelancers have been exaggerated by people who have never actually been a freelancer (not your fault, a lot of people just don't know!). If you're truly skilled in your craft as a freelancer, you make whatever you put into it. On average, freelancers make more per hour than 70% of the traditional workforce in the U.S. And they do it on their own time, a lot of times doing what they love. (And I'm not knocking a traditional job at all - it all depends on what you're called to do, and for some, the best way to get there is freelancing. For others, it's not.)

Still, I think this quote is less about the physical aspects of life and more about being master of your inner self. Obedience to someone will always be a part of everyone's life, whether we like it or not; we will never be truly "free" in the sense that we can do whatever the heck we want without anyone in authority over us, which would be a very bad idea anyway because we're human. We need structure. True freedom is being at peace with yourself, with those around you, and with God.

Thanks for the really thought-provoking post! :)

Obviously no. A man cannot be free if he is not a master of himself because, he is not in full control of all his endeavors.

I think that people aren't more afraid to face the challenge and risk that comes with being a self-employed than being treated badly or injustly at workplace.
