Pros and Cons for an E-reader

Post by Madison Apostoliuk »

Hi all,

I am new here and I'm considering getting an e-reader.

I've never had one before, I love physical books but for the purpose of reviews I thought it might be easier to have an e-reader so I have more options.

So I was wondering what the pros and cons are, whats your favorite one, what one would be more cost effective, etc?

Let me know your thoughts!

I personally enjoy using the Kindle e-reader. It's $12 a month and have a ton of variety when it comes to genres and authors.

Pros:
Easily look up the definition of words you're unfamiliar with.
Audible reading for some titles.
Long lasting battery life.
Glare free screen time.
A privacy screen.

Cons:
Lending books won't be as easy as an actual book.
Vulnerable to damage.

Pros:
You can use Libby attached to your library card to read tons of free books
It is so portable, and you can really read anywhere
The kindle paperwhite I have is waterproof so I don't have to worry about reading in the pool

Cons:
I sometimes still buy the physical book after I have read them on my kindle, because I want them in my physical library

Hi All,

I always been a book reader. As you all know, we love the smell of new books and old books too and its always been an experience when you read in a book.

But recently I have been reading books in the format of e-books which I'm not proud of but I'm unable to buy some books which are just one time read or books which I don't want in my shelves. I don't own a Kindle or an e-reader but I have Tab and my iPhone.

After reading e-books, I have some pros and cons

Pros:
  • It's easy to carry around as many books as I want
  • I can track my all-read books and I can see my progress

Cons:
  • I don't feel like I'm reading a book. I miss that experience
  • My eyes are super strained
  • I don't have book on my shelf as a trophy
  • I miss my visits to book stores.
  • Miss going to libraries and meet my own kinda people
At the end, lets just say that in my opinion, I love reading a book in hand rather than e-book.
I look forward to buy more books.

E-reader Pros:
E-readers are super portable and can hold many books. You can change text size, read in the dark, and the battery lasts long. You can buy and get books quickly, save room at home, and use less paper. They can be cheaper in the long run and have handy tools like dictionaries.

E-reader Cons:
Looking at screens can be tiring. E-readers can break easily, need charging, and can be expensive to buy at first. If they break, you can't read your books. Some e-books can't be shared because of rules. Real books feel different in hand. Some people might find e-readers tricky to use.

Pros are that they are lightweight, compact and their battery lasts long. Plus they are cheaper than buying a few books. On th eother hand, I can't flip through pages as fact as with a book.

the pro of an ereader is that
you can read anywhere anytime and even when no one is watching
The con is that it can damage your eyes if you are not careful

As I get older an e-book has so much more appeal. When I was younger, I never had any issues reading paperback books and I loved the smell of new books. But as I get older, reading on something that has a backlight has so many advantages, also I can zoom if I need to. Now I often find myself moving to either an e-book or audible format for many books, especially longer books and series like Game of Thrones. I tried reading these paperback and it was bothering my eyes so much. I LOVE a physical book, the smell, the aesthetic, the feel of physically turning the pages, and a non-reliance on battery life, but e-books also have a whole lot to offer. I am a big fan of a large selection of books instead of carrying around 3-4 physically large books on vacation.

I love both types. E-books have many more advantages, such as what has been stated above. I have both types of books, so that I can have the physical books for easy reference or to re-read.

Although a physical book is sometimes better, in my opinion, than the e-reader, the e-reader is fairly convenient. If you go on vacation, you can bring a lot more books! Also, often their screen is sort of "matte" so it's not as hard on the eye than, say, an iPad or your phone, which I really appreciate. However, I found that it was hard to actually pick one because if you get a Kindle, then you sort of have to use that app, and if you get a Kobo, you have to use that app to read. I have a Boox Onyx, which sort of works like a tablet but with an e-ink display, so I can use both. The price of the device was pretty high, however. So it depends if you think you will be using this at all. Maybe you can try some in the store and see if they would fit for you.
