Considering an E-reader

Post by seayork2002 »

Hi,

I live in Australia (not sure if this makes a difference) and would like an ereader but want to know how easy it is to download/buy/obtain books for it and does it only work for novels???

Thanks

I have a Kindle and it is way too easy to buy books! :) Our libraries are now offering books for Kindle as well although I haven't tried any yet. I don't think living in Australia makes a difference. Can you purchase things off Amazon? Check out their website and they tell you all about the Kindles and different versions. There are also a lot of forums on there that could probably answer any questions you may have. I love mine! I would recommend getting the lighted cover you can get for it. It protects the Kindle and the light is super for reading in the car at night or even in bed while my husband is sleeping. Hope this helps.

Yes, I totally recommend an ereader. I probably never would have bought one for myself any time soon because I am cheap. I would think why pay one or two hundred dollars for a device to read books when I can get any book free from the library. But my wife got me a Nook for my birthday and it is awesome. To answer your other questions, it is easy to buy books. You can do it right from the device. The local library also has support for ereaders for many books. I do not know how the Kindle works, but I can upload ebooks in almost any format straight to my Nook from my laptop and then read them, which works good for free books available on the internet such as public domain works or even, for instance, the 20-or-so-page parks and recreation PDF flyer for my town that explains all the goings on in town. My sisters both have Nooks and I'm sure I can find some other 'Nook friends' and you can lend each other certain books on the Nook, but I have not even needed to try that feature yet.

As A24 says if anything it's too easy to download books for the Kindle.
All you need is an account with Amazon & a broadband connection. You can select the book on the site on your PC or on the Kindle itself & once you click the button it starts to download immediately ... don't ask me how it does it kinda magic I guess!.
Only difficult bit is when the Visa bill arrives :(

I own a Kindle and a Kobo, and the Kindle is the superior machine for me because Amazon offers unexpurgated collections of work for various classical authors. If you like reading classics, then you should definitely purchase a Kindle. I got everything written by most of the Golden Age Russian authors (Dostoevsky, Tolstoy, Goncharov, Turgenev, etc) for under $10. The deals are unbelievable. The Kindle is also marginally more user intuitive, and the battery life is way better. My one gripe is that you have to purchase a light separately, because having one built in supposedly compromises the ink quality. I can't speak for the Nook, but the Kindle is definitely well worth your money if your tastes are similar to mine.

Personally I like Kindles better. I heard that the Kobo and the Nook are not terribly user friendly. Plus I read that B&N owns the Nook and they haven't been doing too well. I'd recommend a Kindle. You can buy a book on Amazon and it is sent directly to your device. Very easy to use!

I have one, but I am old school. I prefer having a real bookcase full of books. But the Kindle is good.

I've had a kindle fire, an original nook, and an iPad. Out of the three the iPad is the most functional although I like the paper screen of my nook. It's definitely a nice thing to have for travel, a lot easier to pack :D but I still read a lot of traditional books

Consider no more! Go out and purchase one today you will not be sorry. E-readers are so convenient to have around. On a lazy day you can just browse and purchase books on your e-reader. You can even save a trip to the library and purchase free books as well as audio books there also. It doesn't have to change your love affair with traditional books; it only enhances your reading experience.

It seems I'm the only one with a sony PRS T2 ereader. Anyway, the point is, if you love reading and don't want to hurt your eyes then go for it. :) I'm a real bookworm. If I get hooked in a book then I finish it in a day or 2. I don't re-read a book no matter how much good it is. I prefer exploring new writers and new stories. So, it is more efficient to purchase ebooks. Also, my ereader's memory lasts for 2 months without using wifi. And, it gets charged pretty fast. Its my most loved priced possession. :)
