In answer to the title question, I have no idea how many ebooks there are but, according to Wikipedia, there are over 2 million free books available. Wow!

I think every new book gets put online automatically...not sure about the old books.

In the case of bestselling authors, these statements are not entirely correct.
You can often read a portion of a new book online but not the whole book unless you pay for it.
Old books are free online because their copyright has expired.
You can borrow any book from a public library for free.

Almost every book I want to read I can find in istore.
Not free of course but available on line.
Occaisionally I have seen a hard copy book and then found it is not in the istore - but this has only happened couple of times.

I think Google had plans to digitize all the books and make them available online, i think they ran into some problems later on, i guess they need to get all the stakeholders on board before this goal can be achieved though. publishers, writers etc.. all should reach some common ground before this becomes reality.

With websites like libgen, I feel the number of free books available could reach millions or even tens of millions.
