Being judged for something that you have no control over is something that most of us have faced. I felt that Cole and Karina suffered a lot because of that. They were not born special by choice, so punishing them for that was cruel.

I think a theme that was prevalent was perseverance in the face of adversity. Being different and being treated differently should not discourage you forever. You should try your utmost to overcome it in order to survive.

We cannot simply discount the paramount centralization of racism in this creation. Hence, I can state that it is one of it's main themes. Also, this book discusses the power of perseverance in many aspects.

I noticed the strong theme of violence and how humans will almost always find ways to discriminate against each other despite their circumstances. With the addition of powers, I noticed how people will always see things in others that they wish they had or are afraid of. These subconscious, and sometime conscious, feelings from people have lead to the increase of violence we see in the book. Even when those people never asked to be born that way and have to live that way, they have to deal with the negative and violent actions of the people who blame them for things that were out of their control to begin with.

There are quite a lot of themes to be drawn from this book, spinning from racism, pandemic, crisis and betrayal.
Harmony in chaos. It's all a matter of perspective.
