Themes in the book

Post by Owuamanam Eberechukwu »

I feel the story of Kaarina and Monty is similar to the story of most individuals who face racism. They are persecuted for something that was not their fault. They were born abnormal and with special abilities. They didn't choose to be born with a special gift. However, they have to face the consequences of being born that way. Relatively, I feel one of the themes in the book is racism. Those who were normal felt threatened and hunted the abnormal. What other themes could you identify from the book?

I did notice this about the abnormals. They were persecuted because of something they were born with. That is very similar to how people feel judged today. I also felt like the whole situation had a similar vibe to what people went through with the pandemic. People weren’t wanting to be around others, sticking to their own groups, and there is also a lot of judgement. The whole book also had an isolated feeling, which we all experienced through the lockdowns.

Themes present are discrimination among Manny "abnormal" people. Determination is what kept most going. Judgement and segregation are also present.

Apart from racism which is the main theme of the novel, we also have other themes, though not as important, but they contribute to the creativity of the book, which is discrimination, perseverance, determination, and the likes.

Being born abnormal isn't their fault in any way, but the segregation they experienced is something I don't like. A key theme is determination, which helped them to scale through, despite what they faced. Another theme I noticed is vengeance.

Racism is a major issue in this work, as are other themes including determination, perseverance, and prejudice. I was also struck by the presence of conflict.
