Meenahhhh wrote: 01 Aug 2022, 16:17 How many themes did you notice in the book? How could you relate to them? I think for me, I could relate to the themes of women’s rights, police brutality, and racism.
I saw quite a few themes but I would say the ones that stood out to me were power, justice, marginalisation and idealism vs practicality.
Power obviously relates to how the police abuse their position, but also how Steve uses his power as a cop to try and make a change to the system. The corruption and power struggle due to hierarchy as well as the protests by the defenceless all supported this theme too.
Justice is difficult to define, so it stood out to me as everyone served their own version of justice. To the police like Rizzo, justice is following the law and using force when necessary, but to Steve, justice is about doing what's right and making the world a better place for its citizens.
Mariginalisation was also quite important as groups like women and people of colour were discriminated against. We see the objectification of women and their fight for equal rights along with how the book touches on racism.
One thing that I would say that struck me was Steve's journey as a cop. While all his college friends protested change, including Roxy, all of them were simply idealists, and hesitant to actually do something. Steve was the only one who translated his hopes into action and tried to change the system, despite how difficult it was.

I could relate to the theme of police brutality because I have experienced it before, and I strongly advocate against it.

There were a lot of themes in the book but police brutality stood out for me. It is a common occurrence in the society today it has claimed a lot of innocent lives. I hope this book can sensitize the public on this.

The themes I recognized in this book include racism, women's rights, police brutality, corruption and love and betrayal. The theme that affects me most is that of corruption because in my country it is rampant and is the major cause of suffering.

This book explores themes such as love, riots, discrimination, police brutality, determination, and fear, which helped me understand what the character was attempting to achieve.

I took note of the themes of; brutality, hopelessness, war, corruption, racism, vileness, and human rights abuse. We all see this happening in real life, so I could relate with all of them.

I am lucky enough to not have experienced any of it personally but have seen it happening to other people and it's just really heartbreaking to see something like this prevailing in this era. The only way we have progressed is in technology but our minds are still stuck in the old era of all stuff negative.
You took my thoughts right out of my head. You cannot imagine how grateful I am that I did not experience that.
