I agree there were aspects of Steve's life that showed a bit of hypocrisy, but overall I wouldn't outrightly classify him as a hypocrite. No one is perfect, so those are the not-so-perfect sides to him.

No, he's not. He just had to do what he had to do. But whenever his job came between him and Roxy, I'd say he Is a little soft. For me, he tried his best, although it was not good enough for Roxy.

To be fair.. I think he needed time before he would have the courage to arrest his friends. Especially since not long before he had participated in the same.

I agree! He seemed to think that he and his friends were outside of the law for some reason, it really bothered me.

I thought the same thing when I read this book. I think that he should have set an example whether he was in uniform or not. Corruption is not the only thing to watch for in a police department, a good conduct should also be watched.

I thought Steven was a hypocrite. When he decided to be a policeman, he decided to uphold the rules and regulations of society and ensure that others do so. I did not like the fact that he overlooked Roxy's behavior.

To be honest, I'm not sure if Steve can be considered a hypocrite. Whether he's bad because of smoking pot or not can be a discussion on its own because of the current legalisation of marijuana in some places. But the main reason he joined the police force was the corruption and police brutality, and he always stood by his beliefs.

I agree. His behavior especially concerning Roxy comes off as morally gray.

Anyone in the position Steve was will do what he or she can to protect his loved ones. But Steve did not do well by staying in the same area with those smoking.

Good! Because I also thought of this. I thought he would report his brother, Tom, who made drugs his source of livelihood. But I think that’s not the main focus of the book, the main focus was about corruption. Maybe that’s why emphasis was not laid on the usage of drugs.

I guess it depends on your view of whether or not Roxy's arrest was legal and necessary. The need for violence from the police at the protests is a big topic in this book, and the book leans very much towards the idea that the police themselves primarily incited violence. During that particular protest where Roxy was arrested, the protesters were non-violent until the police tried to disperse them violently. Thus was he using his authority as a police officer to wrongfully get Roxy out of jail? After all, the desk sergeant had informed him that no charges would be pressed against any of the arrested if someone were willing to sign for them.

I did not find Steve to be a hypocrite. We need to remember the story is about young adults in their early 20s. They are not going to be mature, they will not make the best decisions, and are not the most principle-following people in life. Everyone has been through that age, and I can certainly understand Steve turning a blind eye to his friends and sometimes making stupid decisions. He chose to make a difference in the police world and decided to bring forth a change, but it does not really make him a man with principles and integrity. He is still that college graduate who is struggling to choose the right in a world full of wrongs.

He is not an hypocrite. He was against the systemic corruption embedded in the police force. And he was not corrupt.

I can't say he was. Although some of his actions seem to betray him. But he did what he thought was best at the moment.
