Participating in war should be a voluntary decision. Perhaps many children attend voluntarily but surely do not know what they would be getting into.

Chimereucheya O wrote: 03 Aug 2022, 13:10 In cases like this, if nothing is done, the war will still come to them. Nobody is safe during wars, and the governments do this to hide themselves and because they know that people can't complain because they are at war.
The main problem is letting a war happen. If I was in power, that's what I'd try to avoid.
Very correct comment; sadly it seems that those given the opportunity to choose whether or not to start a conflict were not so wise. Seeing it from your point of view, it is impossible not to agree, if a war starts we all must be prepared; age does not matter.

I think it is terrible when young people are called to war. I would set a 21 age minimum. I’m sure no one wants to send children to war, but the loss of our freedom would affect everyone including children.

The drafting of kids to war just paves way for continuation of war in the future as such norm is also adopted by them. If I had the power then I'd end it to bring up children without the need of war.

I think this is a very wrong decision.
What then will be the fate of a country when their future leaders are being drafted to war.
I think youth from 22 above are legible to be drafted to war and not kids.

As far as I can think, this issue is not a modern issue. It has been around for as long as anyone could remember.

As for my interference if I had the power... I am not so sure there is much i can do to stop it, in fact I don't think it can ever be stopped. If the government doesn't draft kids to war, terrorists will. It is just an endless circle.

Most governments in some countries do the needful for their youth. Some governments don't even care, like my country Nigeria.

I think that only kids who volunteer willingly should be allowed to go fight a war. Drafting kids forcefully is child abuse and against many laws. It is synonymous to killing them straight away because they may not even be able to handle weapons.

On another note, war should be avoided as much as possible. There has to be alternatives that does not involve war.

It's just an atrocious use of power. Most kids have so much life ahead of them, and they could contribute so much to the world. Greed can kill one's conscience and result in the most demeaning acts, and it doesn't spare governments. I would never do such. I consider wars, especially ones motivated by greed and not defence, evil.

This is a practice that has repeatedly occurred over the years. Events have shown that this often have irreversible consequences on these children who are robbed of their childhood.

Lindzy Herbrand wrote: 03 Aug 2022, 13:10 Whenever I read historical fiction or non-fiction pertaining to war, like with Wild World, I am relieved that in the U.S. there is no longer a mandatory draft. I don’t think it’s right for any age or country to force their citizens to fight without choice. As such my thoughts are that children should absolutely be exempt from drafts, and only those of legal consenting adult age should be allowed to participate.
Mandatory drafts are indeed hellish. As an avid reader, I see several nonfiction books by American authors who mention how the Vietnam War shaped their reality. I hope war disappears entirely because nobody deserves its cruelty.

I would never be ok with drafting kids for war. It is not fine at all. These children deserve to have a choice, when they are drafted like this, they usually do not return as the same person anymore.

CYSON DOROPH wrote: 04 Aug 2022, 01:49 In my opinion, it is menacing, but such times just go to show that there is inadequance of qualified persons or those who would love to join without being forced or called upon. I think it is bad because I think that kids may not be able handle the emotional turmoil, terror, and hardships, however tough they mat be.
No kid should indeed face the terror of war, they are just not equipped for the emotional damage.
However, it is sad that every war sees more kids on the field. And the government can't really do much in prevention, in fact no one can.

This is where my heart aches. I could understand that in desperate times or during wars, government have no other choice than to often set up a system of enrolling kids into defense department. But I will strongly demolish this system if I have the power to.

My first step would be to enshrine in the Constitution or Governing Law on the limit of the age that should be enrolled on war. But who knows, during wars, it's always about winning that obeying the law. When a country lacks the human resources to defend itself, it resort to such laws.
