It is most likely that she is suffering from the loss of her husband and daughter and was doing her best to cope up with the situation, but that does not give her the right to treat another living person who is also suffering to treat her in this manner. It is true that everyone deals with situation differently, like her mother chose the support of God and Roxy chose the support of her studies.

I think her daughter's death affected her mental state because losing someone you love sometimes makes u abnormal.

Well, Roxy's mother definitely suffered a mental breakdown due to the loss of her husband and her favourite child.

I think she is troubled mentally. This might have resulted from not moving on from the loss of her other daughter

Sure. It is not easy to be okay after losing a daughters. But I felt her daughter who is still alive should be a happiness to her.

Roxy's mother was normal and in a soud state. She was only trying to recover from the shock of her losses. She could not face her world this time

I think there is a chance that Roxy's mother might be suffering from a sort of mental illness. Although that chance is small, as the author never explicitly stated anything. What I think is more likely is that it is a combination of grief, frustration, and her strong beliefs. I also don't want to excuse her mother's actions because of some unspoken mental illness, some of the things she did were horrible.
it is what it is ....

I don't think she is suffering from any mental health conditions. I love her actions. she is disciplined and a good mother. i she only wants her daughter to realize that she can't be doing anything she likes with her life without being cautious.

She had a lot of resentment and internalized frustration that poor Rixy found herself the recipient of. Human beings are perfectly capable of those terrible actions without the help of mental illness. Therefore no, I would not from her scenes in the book alone, term her mentally ill.

Roxy's mum for me is mentally balanced just that she's a religious fanatic who thinks her daughter must live on the tenant of her religious principles. Again, her decision to chase Roxy from the house after she caught her with Steve was what every parent would do. Summarily, I think she's mentally balanced.

I feel like she was in denial that her daughter had passed away. She was also firmly entrenched in a religion that did not allow room for anything or anyone outside the box. This part of the book was painful for me because I cannot imagine not having the love of a mother.

Well, some part of her suffered from the loss of her husband and daughter, whom she loved the most. She seems fine but maybe clinging to her religious belief and depression is what makes her look psychologically disturbed.

Roxy's mother suffered from extensive grief over the death of her daughter. That, combined with religious zealotry, created an unstable mental condition. Unfortunately, you can't reason with a religious zealot in much the same way that you can reason with someone drunk. Roxy was wise to get out and keep going.

I think Roxy's mother was in an unhealthy state of mind. She was broken and was clinging to religion and forgetting about Roxy.

I think she needs to see a physiotherapist. It happens a lot with some mothers, when they lost one of their child, they wallow so much in that pain and end up neglecting the other children. It doesn't mean that she hates Roxy, she just has a hard time moving on.
