Was Roxy's mother in a normal mental state?

Roxy's mother was one of the unique characters I saw in the book. She sends her real daughter out of her home and doesn't care if she'll be back. Do you think she might be suffering from some mental illness after her other daughter died?

I feel like she was in denial that her daughter had passed away. She was also firmly entrenched in a religion that did not allow room for anything or anyone outside the box. This part of the book was painful for me because I cannot imagine not having the love of a mother.

I don't think she's suffering from any illness, I think is because she was too obsessed with her dead daughter and never liked Roxy. Secondly, her over-religious character makes it seem so too.

She was in a normal mental state, but she didn't love Roxy that much and was too much of a Christian. Kicking your daughter out because she slept on your bed is something that happens a lot in Africa, so I wasn't so surprised by her actions .

Yes, Roxy's mother may be suffering from a mental break-down after the losses of her husband and daughter. It is very sad to see her sending away Roxy over trivialities. However, once a person gets into a mental decline, it is really hard to understand their actions.

Possibly she is suffering from post traumatic stress disorder. It can also be argued her upbringing and religious background has something to do with it

Though I've not finished reading the book, I've read how Roxy's mother sent Roxy and her boyfriend out of her house. For now, I don't think it's due to a mental issue. I guess it's due to her religious upbringing, involving the "holier than thou" attitude.

I don't think that Roxy's mother suffers from any mental illness, but she is rather in a continuous state of denial of Audrey's death. I consider that she projected the image and preferences of Audrey into Roxy. However, I did not understand why she threw her out of the house if he wanted to preserve the memory of her dead daughter.

I don’t think anyone can be in a “normal” mental state after losing a child. All baselines for normal changes in every way. The example you used, when Roxy’s mother out of her home, is likely fueled by the emotional rollercoaster that is her grief. That kind of grief scars a parent for life.

I think that she is trying to get Roxy to be the perfect daughter. She's scared of losing her after losing Roxy's sister and her father. I see a hurting mother who feels like she has no control over her life anymore.

Roxy's mother is insensitive to her daughter's right to choose whatever she wants to do. She treats her daughter so badly. How do you just tell your child to go to hell and even call her a harlot? That is downright wrong. I do not think that Roxy's mother was mentally stable at all.

I think that maybe she was suffering from post-traumatic stress and never got the help that she needed so she lashed out at the only person she could, her daughter. This is an issue a lot of people go through but don't want to face because they don't want to be labelled as crazy.

I think she was too radical in what she believed in. The death if het other daughter pushed her over the edge so she had to "over believe" in something else. So yes her mental state was not healthy.

No, she wasn't. She went into denial. Afraid to face life head-on after the death of her husband. Afraid to live the reality of racism.

No, I don't think so. I think the woman is properly ok. she was only disappointed and frustrated by her daughter's moral decadence which I believe is normal. The attitude of Roxy to bringing her boyfriend to her mother's house and making love on her bed was questionable. to me her rage and sending her out was justified.
