we need to remember, that all the characters are young adults and are bound to make mistakes. How was Roxy to know the trials and tribulations Steve would be facing in the Police? Young adults are bound to make rash decisions, but what matters is how they deal with the aftermath. the fact that Roxy and Steve both realized that the problem they were standing up to was way more complicated than they could handle was the reality. and how they made their choices in the face of adversity is what matters.

Reality dawned on Steve when he joined the Providence and was exposed to the ground ugly realities. Roxy and her friends were living in a bubble focusing on their careers, so Steve’s behaviour change and habits were naturally intimidating to them.

I don't know exactly what you mean by actions but I believe that the way she felt was justified. She commited to something without knowing what it was gonna be like. After the facts she felt differently than expected. She should stay true to herself and her feelings.
They should have communicated more with eachother along the way.

Standing by someone is easier said than done especially when things are difficult. As a girlfriend and someone who loves Steve, yes, I think she should have stood by him. But as a human, I understand that it's easy to give up and let go when things get hard for someone in your life.

I didn't like the way Roxy treated Steve after he had staked everything for the love he has for her. Steve may have had his faults though. I believe true love covers every anomaly.

Given that she was one of the reasons he joined the force, was her actions justified? What would you have done if you were in Steve's position?
I don't like Roxy. I feel (sorry to the author) that it's quite obvious the women in this novel were written by a man trying to be woke, because they all have a very dimensional personality. They always preach female empowerment, but I find that to be their entire character. That's just my personal opinion, but I also think Roxy is a huge hypocrite. She's always the one calling for change and encouraging others to take a stand, but when Steve actually takes action, she calls him out for changing and pushes him away. It's not justified whatsoever, because as his girlfriend, she should support him for a decision she pushed him into in the first place.

I think Roxy was selfish and nothing will ever justify her actions. Imagine leaving someone when he needed you the most. I was just angry with her throughout the book.

I don't believe her reactions are justified at all. I believe she should have tried to be more understanding and not just been thinking about herself, her future and her studies. Later in the book she confirmed that she thought there was more going on that he didn't tell her and he also mentioned to her a few times that he didn't tell her everything as he didn't want her to worry. That should've "worried" her enough to find out what was going on in Steve's work life, his mindset with everything and try to understand better and be there for him. A relationship is a two way street, not just a one way to one persons interests, etc.

I did not anticipate her leaving him. Some individuals have weak mental health, which means a high tendency to withdraw to a safe place when things have gotten out of hand. However, I would have difficulty forgiving her if I were Steve.

Roxy should have considered the motive behind Steve's actions to appreciate his sacrifice. it was a wrong decision to break up the relationship.

Nothing would ever justify her behaviour. She wasn't a good daughter to her mom and was also a terrible partner to Steve.

I think it's an unfair question to Roxy. It's very easy to tie her entire story and character arc around Steve when she was more than that. All I see from her decisions are her humanity and flaws. Same with Steve.

Roxy's behavior was in no way justified, she promised to stand by Steve and then bailed. She also cheated and betrayed him when he needed her the most.

I can try to see her perspective as well...but it wasn't justified.

I think that Steve and Roxy did not really know each other very well. All they felt could have been mutual attraction that became feelings. Steve did all he did to love and protect Roxy. Roxy on the other hand always chose what was important to her. She did not want to hurt Steve, but when things blew out of proportion she hurt him. The other thing is that both failed to find someone better. Hence, the reason why they came back to each other.
