Do you think the author has given a realistic reason to make Steve change his mind from learning the law.

We see the main character Steve postponing his law school and studied to be a police officer. What are the ideas the made you think he was right?

I think it was right for two reasons: First, indeed, it takes bravery to get into a system you despise, put your life in danger and try to change it. Second, he succeeded. But I think his reasons were not exactly the best ones. I think he stayed in Providence mostly to stay with Roxy and the police stuff was, in the beginning, a secondary matter. And doing something so dangerous just to please someone is probably not the best idea.

I don't believe Steve's motives for joining the police force were compelling. I think the change would have been feasible even if he had gone to law school because law school and police brutality are connected. He would have had an impact but maybe at a different level.

While it seemed to me like a bit of a drastic action to take as Steve was almost done with law school, I understand that there are moments in some people's lives that when they come they cannot be ignored. These are pivotal moments that should not be missed so yes I support the author in this.

Steve had a mind of his own and thought about causing a change rather than just becoming a lawyer when there are lawyers all around. So he set his mind to what he thought was the best for a better system and took the risk.

I don't think the reason was explored well enough. It just didn't make as much sense as I think the author thought it made. Studying law and being a defender of justice was a good place to start if Steve really wanted to effect change

Normal people can change their mind in an instance no matter how important those decisions in their lives. So, I think the author just did the right thing about Steve's change of plans, plus the author justified this action by putting Sergean Durk to inspire Steve about getting involve.

According to the story, it seems Steve gave up law because of Roxy. In order to impress her and stay close to her. That is not a right reason to me although his decision was fruitful.

I do think that idealism is still alive and strong. Steve's reason for deciding to join the force instead of pursuing the law to me is quite realistic. He believes he can do much more good there and make a difference.

Many people always wished to change the situation of things in the country. Yet, no one wants to make any move. We all only wish and talk about how we can it. But as we all know , if wishes were horses ,beggars would ride.
I believe Steve made a good decision in postponing law school. Being the Police , he saw how decayed the system is and works hards toward changing it. It wasn't easy but at the end, that self fulfilment was visible.

Yeah, I think it is quite common to see young people change fields just because they suddenly become passionate about a certain subject, and given the circumstances in the book, where change was desperately needed in society, I think it was quite believable and realistic.
