September 2023 Book Discussion

Post by Heidi M Simone »

Hi everyone!

Oh my goodness, I am so sorry for the lateness this month! Not only was it the first time my son was starting preschool (my first child ever entering school!), but then covid ran through our house like wildfire.

We're all pretty much back to normal and I want to pick this up again.

Since it is late, how about we just discuss what books we've read for the month of September?

Some general guiding discussion questions:

- What book did you read or are currently reading?
- What genre(s) did this book include?
- Share a short synopsis.
- Would you recommend this book? If so, what is the target audience?

Thank you for your patience this month! :tiphat:

- What book did you read or are currently reading?

I finally finished The Vanishing Half by Britt Bennett. Took me a LONG time to finish...

- What genre(s) did this book include?

It was a mix of fiction, coming-of-age, historical fiction, and contemporary.

- Share a short synopsis.

Basically, it was about these twin black sisters who lived in the south in the past. Since they were both fair skinned, they weren't considered "black black". One of the sisters would rather erase all her memories from her past, while the other embraces it.

- Would you recommend this book? If so, what is the target audience?

Eh, it was okay. There were moments that I was intrigued and wanted to continue reading and there were moments that I couldn't care less about the book. Unfortunately, the ending was not my cup of tea. I did not agree with what the author chose to do and I almost question - what was the point of even writing the book if certain characters aren't going to grow, learn, and develop?

The target audience would be young adults to adults, who enjoy contemporary fiction with focus topics of race and deception. I ended up giving it a 3 out of 5 stars.
