Links and Info for New Members

(Formerly the "Support, Feedback and Forum Announcements" forum.)
Please help us make Online Book Club even better! Please post suggestions, feedback and ideas for new features. Wild brainstorming and potentially 'crazy ideas' are super-strongly encouraged! :)

For new members (or old members who run into an issue), please make a post in this forum asking any questions you have about using the site and how it works that are not answered in the FAQ. Not only are we happy help you, but also we can use your feedback to make the site better for tomorrow's new member! A lot of the instructions throughout the site and answers in the FAQ are there because someone else pointed out that it wasn't clear before.

IMPORTANT: The Public Suggestion Box is NOT for discussing issues with the Review Team. If you are a reviewer and need help, please first check the Review Team Page and then if you still need help use the Review Team Support Forum. If you are an author and need help, please first check the Author Dashboard and if that does not resolve your issue use the private contact form. For reference, there is a contact link on every page of the website.

To ensure the above procedures are used, posts by new members in the Suggestion Box will be held for moderation.

There are over 240,000 members at Following the proper procedures to get help or make suggestions actually helps us help you much faster.
Forum rules
Please do not discuss issues related to the Review Team in the Public Suggestion Box, as we prefer to deal with Review Team issues privately. If you have an issue or question related to the Review Team, please first check either the Author Dashboard (if you are an author or publisher) or check the Review Team Page (if you are a reviewer). If you are a reviewer and you have a suggestion, you can post that in the special private Review Team Support Forum.

PayPal is currently the only method of payment, so please do NOT send us messages asking if you can use other methods. You need to put the email associated with your Paypal account on the Preferences tab of your Review Team Page.

Payments are sent to the email address associated with your PayPal account, which you should have submitted on your preferences tab. The Review Approval, Publication, and Payment Timeframes thread explains the expected timeline from review submission to expected payment. If a payment is overdue, a contact link will appear on your History tab. You should enquire about the payment via that link, NOT via the Contact Form.

The language written on this site is English.

Spamming will not be tolerated and will lead to your banning. Disrespect of OBC, its staff, or any member will not be tolerated either.

If you want to be a reviewer, you should NOT mark that you are an author when asked about it.

If you clicked on the author option by error, you should choose the "I am not an author" option on the Contact Form page. This should remove you from the author group and reinstate your reviewer status.

If you want to change your email/username, just contact us via the Contact Form with the correct info. No need to open a new account just for that, NOR is it allowed.

Multiple registrations are prohibited and are grounds for banning. It is against the rules to create multiple accounts for any reason.
This includes accounts created due to banned accounts, incorrect email/username typo/etc.
If you need your email/username changed, use the Contact Form to provide the correct information.

Please note that creating duplicate accounts is not only against the rules, it can cause various problems with your account, such as not being able to link your PayPal to your account. It will also get you banned from the site.

In other words, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, create a duplicate account.

If someone who lives in the same household as you (i.e. a roommate) or any immediate family member (e.g. a spouse, sibling, grandparent, child, etc.) join the site, you MUST message us his user name. Please note that if they join the Review Team, you are NOT allowed to review the same books. Not notifying us/reviewing the same book will lead to a banning of both accounts.

The method outlined on the ban notice is the only way to appeal a ban from the Review Team or the Shelves.

Please search before posting. Do not start new threads for topics already started.

Comments copied from anywhere, whether from another members' post, or from off-site, are not allowed. Posting plagiarized comments will result in a warning, and possibly the banning of your account.

Copying comments on the BOTD's posts for the Giveaway will result in disqualification and a warning for a start. Repeating it will result in a ban from the site.

You need to read the BOTM to comment on the BOTM Forums. Generic comments/duplicate topics won't be approved.

Issues with the Review Team are handled via the Review Team Page only, NOT via the Contact Page. If you need another copy of the review book, you should ask for it via your Update tab. If you want to quit the book or ask for an extension, you do so via your Update tab as well. Appeals on scores are done via the Review Team Page only.

Please note that Amazon requires a reviewer to spend $50 on their site (Amazon) to be eligible to leave a review there. Those are Amazon's requirements, NOT OBC's requirements. If you don't meet their requirements and can't leave an Amazon review, you should update your Preferences to reflect that.

C/T/M/H genre is Crime, Thrillers, Mystery, and Horror Books.

  • Help with verifying your email (please follow the instructions from the first post of this thread):
    Email Verification
If your email address is spelled wrong, please contact us with the correct email (via the Contact Form, a link to which is provided below), and an Admin will change it for you. If you want to change your username, please contact us with the new name, and an Admin will change it for you. After verifying your email, you need to click on the Recheck Score button to refresh the page.
  • Site FAQs:
    Bookshelves FAQ
    • If you are interested in the Review Team, the FAQs explain about the Review Team and how to join.
    • Alternatively, if you wish to delete your account, but encounter an error when selecting that option on the Contact form (a link to which is below), the FAQs explain how to do so successfully.
    • if you selected a book from the Select tab of your Review Team Page, you MUST quit it first via your Update tab to quit the Review Team via your UCP or deactivate your account via the Contact Form.
  • Messages sent from the Contact form go directly to the mods:

Please note that the reply will come in the form of a Private Message.
Sending another message because you've failed to check your PMs will result in a warning telling you to check your PMs.
Trial Bookshelf Moderator Group:

Please do NOT apply if you are new/just joined the site, as the request will be rejected. One needs to be here a few months to apply, to be an active poster with at least 200 meaningful posts, and to have at least 50 books on his shelves to join the team. Adding to that, we usually post when we need more volunteers, so stay tuned.

Those interested in joining the Bookshelf moderators should note that the position is strictly voluntary and does not come with any increase to your reviewer level.

Please note that the system is running on Eastern Time, so you should update the status of your review a day before the official deadline if you are in a different time zone.

Please note that the book cannot be rated as 4 out of 4 if it has 10 errors or more. Moreover, the system would not allow you to give it 4/4 on the Review Team Page if you found more than 10 errors.

For the self-purchase review option, any format is acceptable. However, for the reimbursed paperback reviews, a physical copy is required. If the description states Self-Purchase, that means you would have to pay for the book and would NOT be reimbursed for the cost of buying the book.

Soliciting views or comments from other members, via Private Messages, signatures, or asking for them in comments, counts as spamming and self-promotion and is against the rules. Commenting on your reviews (or bumping them) when there are no comments on them also counts as soliciting comments. You should NOT comment on your own reviews unless as a reply to another comment.

Please note that it isn't allowed to re-post your OBC reviews on the forums (or elsewhere). Your OBC reviews are published once by a mod, and you are not allowed to re-post them again. It is also against the rules to comment on your own reviews if you don't have any comments on them as a way to drive up your reviewer score.

Please note that repeatedly posting links to your review, even without explicitly making a request, also counts as spamming.

Likewise, you are not allowed to link to or reference your own website. It also isn't allowed to attach a URL or link to your signature, posts, or avatar.

It is against the rules to create duplicate accounts. Accounts created for the sole purpose of commenting only on a Review Team member's reviews and boost his popularity are not allowed and will lead to the banning of those accounts.

Books on Bookshelves cannot be read or downloaded and are just for show. Your Review Team page explains where and how to get review books.
Reviewers should note that the formatting of the review will appear glitched as it goes through the editing process. This is completely normal and, once published in the public forums, the review will be back to how it looked when you previewed it.

Review books are mostly ebooks (unless otherwise stated on your Review Team page prior to picking the book). Your first reviews are free, and you have to work up to paid reviews. Access to paid reviews depends on your level and score. When the Select tab says "free book", it means that the free review ebook is your payment, and you won't get paid for the review. The free book you get is the review copy you got in return for a review. You don't get another ebook or a traditional copy of the ebook in addition to the review ebook. When the review is a paid one, the payment will be listed on the Select tab.

Please note that you can't request a specific format and can only choose from the available formats. If KU (or any other format) is the only format being shown, that's the only format it's available in.

The page count on the Select tab is not always accurate, so you should check before picking up the review book.

The total of pending reviews at the bottom of the History tab indicates how many reviews need to be submitted. If you submitted all your reviews, the total will be marked as 0. That's how the system works, so there is nothing to worry about. The reviews still needed to be checked, though, so it will say pending next to the review itself.

One MUST read the Books of the Month to comment on the BOTM Forums. One should NOT comment on the BOTM Forums just to gain points if he didn't read the books. Such comments won't be approved.

If the review score tab says there are replies on the review but you are unable to view them, there are NO comments. The reply refers to the review itself. Once you have replies, you can see them by viewing your reviews on the forums.

Your History tab will show you the status of the review as well as tell you whether the review is approved or rejected. If the review status is pending, please wait patiently and don't message us or open threads about it. It can take around two to three weeks to be checked, so please be patient. Any updates/feedback will appear on your History tab, so you should wait patiently for it.

If you submitted the review and didn't finish the questionnaire for some reason, you can access it through your history tab.

When you submit the list of typos following the review, you need to state what are the typos in addition of quoting the whole sentence.

If you are trying to put in a status update and none of the other options on the Update tab apply, then just click on the "other error" option.

The status of the payment should be listed on your History tab on the Review Team Page. The payment is sent automatically. If a review payment is overdue, a reference number with a special contact link will appear on the Review Team History tab. If the payment is overdue, please use the special contact link on the History tab to send a message to the special payment inquires address, making sure to include the listed reference number. You should ask for the payment via that link only, NOT via the Contact Page or the forums. The special contact link on the History tab must be used, so the message will go to the right person.

If the Giveaway prize is overdue , a special contact link will appear on the giveaway history page. You should inquire about the prize via that link only.
