The narrative of Frederick Nachman's disappearance in this book serves as a critical case study in international relations, particularly highlighting the challenges faced by individuals caught between their national identity and the bureaucratic complexities of international diplomacy. The book details how both the Swedish and US embassies refused to assist Nachman, a Swedish national who had lived in the US for thirty years, during his crisis in Nigeria. This refusal was based on his long absence from Sweden and his status as a permanent resident, not a citizen, in the US.
