I don't think Emily needed to die to further Spirit's journey with his team. I would have liked to see more collaboration between her and Iggy as a side story. I don't think it made sense that she was able to create such an intricate rune when she had barely begun to learn about them, or why she would have in the first place. She could have put in some sort of protection rune instead.

I loved the book ending. I believe it was fitting as we wait for the sequel. Although I was saddened by Emily's death, the ending was still nice.

Battles have been fought, Spirit and his compatriots have matured, are tired yet satisfied, Amelia is still alive, Meiko has had his come-uppance, and the demons are raring to go.. all poised for the next instalment of this exciting saga.

As I read the book, I expected some characters to die when the demons came marching into battle. I wasn't entirely surprised by the fact that Emily died, but the way she died was so sudden and unexpected. I felt emotionally attached to each character. So, Emily's death saddened me, and Spirit's response to her death was realistic and understandable. The author did an excellent job of setting the scene for the next installment of the series because now Spirit, Meiko, and the others must fulfill their quest of finding the other relics and fighting off the rising demon army. The ending was bittersweet (reflecting real life) because even though Spirit lost his sister, he defeated a powerful demon and made several new friends. He misses Emily, but he has hope for the future.
