The graphic sexual scenes it is. I couldn't recommend for my younger sister that loves reading. This book would have a wider audience in the absence of those sexual contents that I think were majorly unnecessary.

I think there was too many US history references. There were a few times I started to lose sight of the point of the story. I had to go back and re-read a few times.

The book contains an overwhelming amount of US history, some of which could have been trimmed, making it less accessible for readers unfamiliar with American history. This excess detail is making it difficult for me to fully grasp what the book is trying to convey. Additionally, the vocabulary is quite advanced, requiring me to keep a dictionary nearby while reading, which slows down the reading experience and makes it more challenging to follow.

I don't like that Barry Character doesn't have much explanation like why he was with this other girl. He says he loves Vanessa but he is not given any explanation for the involvement with other girl.

I agree completely with your comment Diana. I tried my best to skip these parts. It would still have been an interesting book without all the graphic stuff.

I think that some readers may find this novel inappropriate due to its sexual material, and that was my least favorite aspect of it. I believed that the sexually explicit stuff in the book did not add much to the plot and that there was no indication in the description of the book that it would have such content.

I agree that it didn't seem necessary for the sex scenes to be that graphic. A more restrained use of that would not have detracted from the story. I detested Rosalie's death as well.

I didn't particularly appreciate how Barry was portrayed. I thought the graphic sex scenes made him come across as sexually demanding towards Vanessa. It made their love story feel fake to me.

I got this book from a friend and I was amazed with everything about it. I had the opportunity to get it at a discount but I couldn't due to health reasons, but when I read it from my friend, i found nothing I liked least about the book.

In Deceptively Calm by Patricia Skipper, I least liked the graphic sexual abuse scenes. They felt unnecessary at times, especially with how frequent they were.

I least liked how the book ended. There is so much left to read in this story and so much left unknown. Unless the author plans to write a book to follow after this with more of the story, this ending was horrible. I'm not a romance novel fan, but I liked the suspense and almost mystery feeling this had when it wasn't graphic.

The book’s extensive focus on U.S. history can be overwhelming and may alienate non-American readers, making it difficult to grasp its main message. Additionally, the advanced vocabulary necessitates frequent dictionary use, adding to the challenge of understanding the text.

I didn't like how it ended, I mean the fact that Brett had sickle cell and he could only get it if both parents contributed to his illness tells that possibly Tod's mother was fooling around with possibly the help, a black man that gave her attention her husband didn't so this black man could of been Tod's real father. We didn't get to know if Tod and his father were convicted for attempted murder of Vanessa Trishia and the baby. so many unanswered questions and I would of love to see Tod and his parents fall from grace and suffer the consequences of their actions...

The book had too much filler in it. I love details, but this was the wrong kind of detail. We didn’t need to read so much about history that it felt like a text book or have a drawn out description of medical situations. It just felt pretentious and boring. I found myself skimming paragraphs and sometimes even entire pages to get through those sections.
I was also frustrated with the ending! What happened with Tricia? Were Tod and his father ever charged? I can’t stand when it’s left unanswered. There definitely wasn’t enough for a sequel so it couldn’t be that.
