Doctor William Hale was vividly portrayed, his role in the war, also his past with trauma of losing patients in the war and having to shut off his humanity in that period.

Definitely sister Rosalie. She was so vividly portrayed, that we could tell which characters in the book loved her and which ones felt she was just too much.

Sister Rosalie had the strongest personality but Vanessa and Trisha's friendship was very strong as well. I say Sister Rosalie mainly because she reminded me of my catholic elementary school teachers and i have very fond memories!

The author vividly portrays several characters, but Vanessa and Trisha stand out. Vanessa’s complex journey of identity as a Black woman navigating racial tensions is compelling. Her struggle with self-acceptance and being mistaken for white in society adds depth to her character. Trisha is portrayed as courageous and loyal, going to great lengths to protect her friend Vanessa, making her a standout figure in the narrative. Sis Rosalie also adds a lively and loving maternal presence, injecting humor and warmth into the story.

Vanessa is the standout character in Deceptive Calm. Her resilience, complexity, and struggles with identity are portrayed in a deeply human way. Sister Rosalie, the spunky nun, also comes to life with her passionate love for history and care for the orphaned children. Tricia, Vanessa’s best friend, plays an important role, but her character is less fleshed out compared to Vanessa.

Sister Rosalie and Todd. Both are opposite in ethics and brilliantly portrayed by the author. Surprisingly, two such distinct characters have such close contact with the protagonist.

I'd say Vanessa, Sister Rosalie and Trisha were portrayed rather well. Their feelings were felt by their actions and circumstances and by their choices. I could distinctly tell their inner voice and choices apart from the way they interacted with the other characters and that their impact was felt.

I think the that the author did really well at portraying Vanessa, Trisha, Sister Roe, and Tod. I think Barry could’ve been more developed and I wished Vanessa to have more of a character arc, but the others were very well developed and portrayed.

Sister Rosalie's character was larger than life. Her love for her Vanessa and the other children and also her love of history. She was that memorable character you think about long after finishing the book.

I definitely won’t forget Sister Rosalie anytime soon. I was particularly sad when her story ended. I had hoped for some kind of sweet ending for her and Vanessa—maybe sitting in a townhouse, reminiscing about the good old days as she teaches the grandkids history. Trisha also stood out to me; she’s the real ride or die.

I found that Leah’s personality is vividly portrayed, capturing her emotional depth and complexity. The author effectively illustrates her struggles with trust and vulnerability, making her journey relatable and authentic. Additionally, Leah’s interactions with other characters, particularly in moments of conflict and connection, highlight her growth and resilience. The supporting characters, too, are well-drawn, adding layers to the story through their unique perspectives and relationships with Leah. This rich characterization allows readers to immerse themselves in the narrative, as each character's distinct traits and motivations contribute meaningfully to the overall themes of love and healing.

Sister Rosalie was probably the most real character. The author made her personality and stuck with it no matter the circumstance. She was spunky, quirky, and had a take no bs attitude. It didn't matter if it was a tragic event, a funeral, or something sweet and fun. I could always count on Sister Rosalie to be exactly who she was till the end.
