Re: Deceptive Calm book title

The title seems quite suitable. The term calm challenges readers highlighting hidden tension and portraying that calm is just temporary. The title hints to the readers that the story is filled with suspense. It also depicts that the characters show a very different face to the people around them, hiding their feelings, real motives, and secrets. The title hides all the conflicts, disruptions, and emotional turmoils, leaving readers stunned.

I think it was. For the most part, a lot of Vanessa’s life was calm and uneventful BUT everything was a lie. Her race, her history, her heritage, and more it was all fake but she never let it show. Tod was deceptive and his who he really was under a facade. Deceptive calm perfectly explains all the major events in my opinion.

I think it fits in the respect of Vanessa herself. She was very deceptive about stealing an identity and calm about it. She also kept calm about a lot of her life, aside from the abortion. She went through a lot of deception in her life - from Barry to Tom to even herself.

The title "Deceptive Calm" is truly insightful. It perfectly captures the essence of the book. It reflects those situations where everything seems calm on the surface, but there's a storm brewing underneath. The author made an excellent choice, as the title piques curiosity from the start. You constantly wonder what's hidden behind this apparent calm. As the story unfolds, the meaning of the title becomes increasingly clear. It's like a subtle warning not to be deceived by appearances. I found it an intelligent choice and perfectly aligned with the narrative.

The title of the book explains every aspect of the book. It depicts the struggle and the social and sexual differences in the book.

Although I enjoyed the book immensely, I did not think the title fit the story. However, I think the author chose this title because after Vanessa lived a life of deception, finally, there was a calm within Vanessa and Barry. After many years of being apart from each other, Barry and Vanessa were reunited and started a new life together along with Vanessa's son.

There were a couple of times when the title was fitting, but I didn't feel like it was fitting overall. When I think of Deceptive Calm, I think of some tension simmering under the surface, largely hidden from view. Most of the racial tensions were explicit and not hidden. The only time I felt that it was fitting was when it seemed to be referring to Vanessa's husband's and family's hidden plans for her.

The title effectively captures the tension and struggle that lie at the heart of the tale, making it a great choice for the book. The term appears to convey a sense of peace or normality. Still, I find it appealing.

I like the name, and find it fitting for the book in many ways. Obviously it fits for the racism, but also as a description of Vanessa and her hidden persona, or her new life where they live a privileged life, but loveless and full of unwanted sex. Or even the love with her first boyfriend-he was deceiving her very calmly, it almost seemed like he did not even care(ofc that is not true, given the ending of the book).

I think that the title is extremely fitting for the book. Throughout the story, we see Vanessa go through these traumatic things in her life, such as losing Sister Roe, her relationship with Tod, etc. and along with the cover art itself I feel as though it truly is a deceptive calm. When I first started reading this book, I didn't think the story would unfold the way that it did, however, it did and I was thoroughly surprised for sure.

I felt it was quite fitting for the time frame the story took place and for the plot itself. Tension radiated underneath the perfect calm that was portrayed in the world, at every turn.

I believe that the title is fitting for the book for various reasons. Firstly, the title of the book catches the reader's attention. My attention was caught upon watching the book title and book cover, which made me read the book summary (kudos to the author). Secondly, the title of the book matches the book's contents. Sometimes I feel that authors pick a title only to hook us when in fact it does not relate to the contents of the book. However, upon glancing at this book I can safely say that the book's author does not deceive nor disappoint.

The title of the novel is what peaked my interest initially. Appearances can be deceiving, and Vanessa seems calm and composed. However, under the surface she is panicking, and anxious about her true identity. The title fits.

I think the tittle is a true reflection of more than just the main character in this book. The deceit under the calm at eyeshot goes beyond the brewing turmoil caused by racism and societal inequalities shown in the story but how many characters like Barry who was portrayed as wildly taken by his love for Vanessa still went on to get involved and marry someone else just because there’s a possibility Vanessa wasn’t as black as he was. How Tod appeared to move mountains just to be with Vanessa while at the end he ends up being emotionally controlling, abusive and detached all at the same time. The book managed to keep me ‘calm’ by seeing how Vanessa after the long stride she took to hide from her racial truth managed to be a total trailblazer of the women of her times while at the same time I was always waiting for the glass of that long stride of deceit to come tumbling down. The tittle is everything!
