I’d recommend this book to fans of historical fiction, especially those interested in the Civil Rights era and American history. It would also appeal to readers who enjoy stories centered around identity, personal transformation, and overcoming societal challenges.

Fans of books filled with suspense and fictional stories based on history would enjoy this book. People who get triggered by racism should sit this one out.

I think aside the obvious fans of historical fiction that would find this book very interesting, I will recommend it to people of color in America. Then anyone who just loves reading would enjoy this book.

To be fair, many people won't like some of the heavy themes and even the romance aspects could feel a bit underwhelming. I think people who like historically accurate stories and a bit of romance would truly enjoy it.

Personally, I didn't like Deceptive Calm, at least in its current state, for a litany of issues because I think that it's a book with a great premise that is failed by poor execution. If I were to recommend it, I think I would recommend it to my sister so we could analyse the plot, structure, and characters and discuss how the story could have been different.

I recommend it, especially for those who like romance with a strong woman as the protagonist. Vanessa faced several challenges socially, at work, and in her love life.

I would recommend Deceptive Calm by Patricia Skipper to readers who enjoy mystery and suspense, particularly those who appreciate novels with strong character development and unexpected plot twists. Fans of psychological thrillers or domestic dramas might find the story’s exploration of hidden secrets and complex relationships particularly engaging. If you like stories that slowly reveal the darker sides of seemingly normal lives, this book could be a great fit. Additionally, readers who appreciate intense emotional journeys and layered narratives would likely enjoy this book.

"Deceptive Calm" is ideal for those who enjoy complex characters and thought-provoking plots. Those who appreciate narratives that intelligently address past and present will certainly like this book. It's also an excellent choice for those interested in themes such as racial identity and family secrets. It's not a light read, so it might not be the best option for those seeking something relaxing. However, for those who want an engaging story from start to finish, it's a great choice.

Readers who appreciate historical fiction, have a passion for social justice, and wish to delve into the nuanced racial dynamics of the American South in the 1960s should pick up Deceptive Calm. It's an interesting book that makes you think while portraying a chaotic time in realistic detail.
