I feel like the last chapter could have been an entire book in itself, with the detective trying to unravel the mystery of Vanessa’s past and heritage. The ending felt incredibly rushed and left a lot of loose ends (as others have pointed out). Trish was the only character I even liked, and we don’t even find out if she lives or dies!

I was also so disappointed that she ended up with Barry (who apparently only cheated on her because his mother thought she was white?). I was sort of expecting they would tease something between her and the detective to hint at the true love after 20 years of suffering (or whatever it was). I thought the ending with Barry was unearned and underdeveloped.

Really, the whole book was spoiled by the blurb anyway. I just can’t believe they put all of that into a single chapter… It was the nail in the coffin of an already poorly written book for me.

I liked the ending of the book. Although I expect a sequel or something because Trisha's condition wasn't mentioned.

I was glad that Vanessa survived. However, I can’t tell if Trisha survived the toxic substance injected into her. I didn’t like how the union between Barry and Vanessa went. I feels the author was in a hurry to finish up the book.

Honestly, I enjoyed the ending of this book. However, I feel it was rushed and it could have been longer. Considering how detailed the beginning of the book was, I feel the ending could have been more in depth and detailed.

I feel the ending could have gone a number of ways but the author chose the best way that wraps it all up and makes sense once all characters are accounted for its a good ending. I was happy that Vanessa's life finally got some real calm in it, and it was one she had always wanted.

Honestly, I could sense the end coming a mile away. I disliked the male saviour trope and that she went back to Barry. I wished she had grown as a woman and stood for herself against the world. She had the potential to be a strong female lead but we just didn't get that, which I think is a shame.

While the end came back full circle, I wish we would’ve known more details about getting back with Barry and how their life went. Did he ever find out about the abortion? What did he think of Vanessa‘s son? Did he accept him as his own?

I don't care for books that leave some unresolved issues, as was the case with this book. If it is going to leave the reader with a "cliffhanger" there should be some sort of notation of the continuation of the novel so that we know a sequel is coming. Also, I agree with some of the other readers that it seemed somewhat rushed at the end. I would have liked to know what happened with Brett's health, where did Vanessa and Barry go from there, what was the outcome for her husband and his father, what happened to Trisha?

The ending was rushed, leaving me with more questions than answers. An epilogue would have added value.

Very abrupt! An epilogue would have been nice.

Vanessa's life was on hold for a very long time, as she held onto Barry. Such a dedicated hard working person like her, who fought life against all odds deserved a better life, and better new beginning after her disastrous short marriage and considering her up bringing without a proper family. I'm of the opinion that the end of the book was incomplete and left the reader with many questions. I think there are missing pieces that could have been added to give it a much better ending. I would have loved to know after the accident, how their lives were now reconstructed after the whole drama and mishaps, regardless of Vanessa reconciling with Barry. Trisha and Vanessa actually seem to have gone back to where they started.

It seemed like a hurried conclusion. Many parts were left up for speculation. If a sequel is planned, the loose ends are most likely meant to spark intrigue. I was hoping that the ending would delve into the possible legal implications of the high school prank when the identity was discovered. It might have given the story a more realistic feel.

I thought my tablet had an error. Normally, the book closes when I click past the last page. For this book, though, I thought that surely that wasn't the end! I re-opened the book, tried to go past the last page, and it did it again. I went to the Table of Contents, to see if there was something I was missing. So to answer your question, it ended entirely too abruptly.

I was very disappointed. There are too many unanswered questions and why on Earth would she go back to Barry? I just can't wrap my head around it.

The ending of "Deceptive Calm" was satisfying, tying up loose ends while leaving room for future possibilities. It offered a hopeful resolution to the characters' challenges, balancing romance with social commentary.
