I do feel like the characters were well developed but I also believe that Vanessa stands out, perhaps due to her history being a bit more developed as well, but overall the characters had dept and substance.

Yes, they were properly developed. Majority of the characters have a backstory that even if it was not stated at first, we get to read them in the subsequent pages. It made understanding the characters better.

No, I struggled to connect with Vanessa, as I believe she never actually shows growth. She is strong and perseveres, but she never actually felt like she accepted who she was. I also believe that Trisha and Barry lack a proper personality. I enjoyed the book and could look past it for the plot but the characters felt too simple for me.

Sister Rosalie was an interesting character, and her relationship with Vanessa was touching and believable. However, I didn't think Vanessa was a developed character. So much happened to her, but she stayed the same throughout the book and always seemed young and naive.

No, most of them are not developed. I didn't know much about Barry's feelings for Vanessa, so I wasn't surprised when he cheated, but I was surprised that by his actions later on, his feelings might have been genuine, after all.

I believe that the characters are well developed and I like the way their personalities mature through the book.

I feel there were enough backstories for each character. Some were properly developed and some were not depending on how important that character is to the novel.

The characters in the book were well-developed, particularly the relationships between them. Vanessa's bond with Sister Rosalie was a heartwarming portrayal of a mother-daughter relationship, despite not being officially adopted. Her friendship with Trisha was also beautifully depicted, with many poignant moments as they navigated adolescence together. In contrast, Vanessa's relationships with Barry and Todd were tragic and abusive, but well-portrayed. However, I felt that the conclusion of these relationships was lacking, leaving me wanting more closure and resolution regarding the fate of these characters.

I believe the characters in the book emerge mostly through their actions. I would have given more space to their thinking, to portraying their inner wirld. In particular, Vanessa holds much potential in this sense. To survive what she did, the many difficulties, she must have an high coping ability and resilience, which could be stressed enough reporting her thoughts.

This is a great point to make! It's disappointing when the characters aren't on the same level as the plot, as it leaves the story feel rather underwhelming and like the author left something on the table.

Why I can't say yes, I can't say no too. The characters were developed well but to an extent, I feel something is missing in the character 's relationship, especially Rosalie and Vanessa's relationship

Yes, the characters in Deceptive Calm are well developed which is One thing I love a lot about this book. Even the minor characters are properly utilized.

The author just moved through the events of their lives without telling us much about their inner thoughts, feelings, or motivations. There was too much information about their daily lives and not enough information about their inner lives. For example, why did we need to know so many details about Trisha's job? I also thought we were given too much information about some of the side characters. I don't care that the surfing officer's wife is pregnant! It was just overwhelming and distracting, and took away from what could've been the development of Vanessa.
I couldn't agree more. I felt the story moved too quickly and that character development was lost in the race to the end.
