My review of Deceptive Calm

Let's start with this-a positive-good descriptive writing...but needs proofread. Lots of errors-seemed rushed...Also don't like the word "colored"...I never have. And I'm white! Too much sex and the plot was all over. Hard to follow.... I lost interest fast! But...there is potential in the author. I can see that. Very good historical research...Hopefully this helps. Also....Story starts a little boring, at least I thought so.

To be fair, I agree with some of these aspects you mentioned. The story can be confusing at some points and thefact that major events kept on happening made it feel rushed. I got tired of reading at some point but the overall plot was quite interesting, so that made me keep on reading to discover what happens.

I loved everything about this book.d The style of writing, the premise, the characters, the word building.. The suspense and tension as well. Everything. I can not wait to complete it. The author did a very commendable job.

I agree that it starts boring, there's too much sex, and more editing is needed. However, I think it becomes more interesting with the sequence of events. I wish there was more about Vanessa's career and how it would've been working in a newsroom. I didn't like that there was so much focus on "romance," or non-consensual sex and uncomfortable, forced relationships.

For the quality of writing, I was surprised at the number of grammatical errors and misused words. Also, a lot of the dialogue came across as stilted. A good editor certainly would have made suggestions as to how to make it seem more natural. Lots of the characters spoke like they were reading straight from a textbook.

I enjoyed reading the book. Sometimes, I go back to reread it. It is a great book with many lesson. I would surely recommend it.

I'm now a bit worried as I'm just about to dive into the book. I'm not a huge fan of historical fiction, as such the plot and characters have to be mighty compelling to keep me hooked. Hopefully, there are still some aspects of this book that will appeal to me.

The author did a pretty good job writing this book. Although the book contains racial slurs, I believe the author deliberately left it that way, because racism is a strong theme in the book.

I understand all you've said relating to this book but I don't think it started slow, the first chapter was packed with action, character introductions, and historical facts.

Phew, seeing tht i am not the only one that found parts of the book dull is reassuring. i agree with lot tht hs alredy been said. There was too much sex for the sake of sensationalism, particularly in the beginning, although I think the later 'sex' scenes can be read differently. I thought the first 25-30% could have been scrapped or dealt with quicker so that we could focus on the main plot.

I understood that the book was going to use racial slurs, but i don't thin it was ecessary for the narrator to join in with these. Thankfully, these only top and tail the book. It was an interesting read. I neither loved, nor loathed it, but it does need a lot of trigger warnings.
