Hi Teaira! Thank you for your question. Deceptive Calm was full of a lot of events and characters! I would say my favorite part of the book was the nuns. Sister Rosalie and Sister Roe provided a humorous edge to the book. They served as mentors to Vanessa, comic relief, and authority figures. I admire that they undertook running a whole orphanage. This really showed they were beacons of God's love.

It painted a vivid picture of life in the '60s and '70s, and it did so realistically, along with the prejudices and segregation against people of color, I found it to be a representation of those times.

Hi Teaira! My favorite part was the friendship portrayed between Trisha and Vanessa, almost like a sisterly bond, and the bond between Vanessa and Rosalie.

Family is not always blood related and can transcend orientation, gender and race.

One of my favorite parts was when Vanessa was trying on the two dresses for the dance and the comraderie between her and Sister Rosalie.

I really liked Vanessa's character and her friendship with Trisha. I felt those two characters were developed pretty well and I enjoyed how they supported one another, even though they did not always agree with each other's actions.

For me, the best part of Deceptive Calm was how the characters felt real because they made mistakes, changed their minds, and grew. I also liked how the book used the backdrop of racial segregation in the southern U.S. without making it just a history lesson—it was the characters' lives. That said, I think some transitions were rushed, and the ending felt a bit too convenient.

My favourite part was definitely Trisha and her friendship with Vanessa. I wished that Trisha featured more than she did and moved closer to Vanessa sooner.
She was the most interesting character in the entire book. I wish I had a friend like her.

Personally, my favorite part of Deceptive Calm was the representation of strong women in journalism. As I am currently studying communications myself, I thought it was great to be able to watch Vanessa climb up the ranks of a profession which was almost completely a man’s world back then. It was very empowering to see her unwavering determination and her incredible attitude towards her work. I was very much rooting for her the entire time through all the injustice and blatant sexism she faced.
