I liked how the naming of Patricia Skipper's novel was subtly and discreetly introduced on page 199:

"These locals say that you are incredibly lucky since the weather is clear today for your arrival. During the winter, months go by without seeing the top of the Matterhorn. They hope this 'deceptive calm' will endure for your entire visit so your memories will last a lifetime."

Indeed, the memories and experiences which Vanessa von Westercamp has in Zermatt, Switzerland are far from calm; they are even horrific.

"She mulled over her earlier horror but decided not to ruin the last night." p.202

It was clever to introduce the title that way. And I understand why she used that reference for the title. However...the reference to "deceptive calm" and the meaning of it is probably too obscure for many readers.

I agree that it may be too obscure for some readers. But the reference seems fitting enough. Personally, I think there must have been something else that made her finally decide on that title for the novel.

I liked the title and found it quite accurate for the book. Vanessa's life was calm and quiet until it wasn't. There was always an undercurrent in her life, no matter how together it seemed at the time. It always seemed as if it could fall apart at any moment, which is honestly what kept me reading the book!

I agree. I found the title of the book to be particularly fitting and thought-provoking. It’s the first time I’ve come across a title like that, Deceptive Calm, is a perfect title name describing the hidden storm and all the impending chaos to ensue.
