Well, the protagonists' perceptions make the simulations totally realistic. They consciously know that they're illusions, and they know they can do "tricks" such as skipping ahead in time, but all their reflections during their experiences confirm that, subjectively, they're indistinguishable from reality.

Reality is merged with illusion, creating a whole new experience. It is like living in a dream, knowing fully it is a dream. The simulations seamlessly merge reality with illusion.

I think the book merged reality with illusion. Even though the characters knew what they were experiencing wasn't real, it felt very real to them. Their experiences also stuck with them afterwards and had an impact on them and the decisions they made in their real lives.
