James Joyce -- greatest prose author?

Per my sigline you can see that I'm a huge Joycean, and love the novel "Ulysses" and regard it the finest novel every written.

What are your feelings about Joyce, good or bad. Has Ulysses proven too tough a nut to crack? If so I can provide some "helper" books.
