I think Anne Rice is the best vampire fiction author ever. I have read almost all of her vampire fiction and some of her ghost fiction as well, though it's not nearly as good. She even has a wonderfully captivating book about a genie. It's one of my favorite books.

I love, love, love Lynsay Sands Argeneau Series. She is the author that got me started reading vampire stories. That also translated to me reading and loving Stephanie Meyers Twilight Series. So you can say I don't have just one favorite author, but Lynsay Sands is the best with over 80 books written.

I don't know if it counts seeing as he's only written one book with vampires, but I loved Grady Hendrix's The Southern Book Club's Guide to Slaying Vampires! I thought it was written in a really great way, and incorporated aspects from mythology and present-day suburban crimes.

I would also like to nominate Sheridan le Fanu for his work with Carmilla. Carmilla is one of the earliest works of vampire fiction -- after The Vampyr -- and is beautifully written, depicts vampires in a seductive and scary way, and the book is a classic.

Anne Rice, for me, is the best author of vampire fiction. She writes memorable characters out of these blood-sucking creatures, and she has an inimitable writing style that will draw you to the story. Now, Stephanie Meyer had a recurring vampire character in one of her novels, Twilight, New Moon, Eclipse and Breaking Dawn but her manner of writing is simpler and less complex than Rice's.
