i'm going to have to agree with MFantasy and say that stephen king reigns above all. (i can imagine many of you shaking your heads in dismay.) MFantasy is right about king's ability to bring a character to life in a few short strokes of the pen, and king was the first (besides agatha christie - ugh) fiction novelist i ever read.

and i -somewhat cringing- agree with LOVEHATESYOU about palahniuk. he is twisted indeed. there was a story someone sent me of his once that involved a guy going down into a pool and getting too close to the suction port...i'll stop there. too graphic.

otherwise, my faves are:

richard matheson
cormac mccarthy
jonathan lethem
timothy james brearton
david benioff

great posts here - lots of authors to look into...

It's difficult to pick favorites. Usually I just have favorites of the moment. Though I still love Sidney Sheldon, I think right now my favorite author is Charlaine Harris because I'm really enjoying her style of writing right now.

My favorite author is Anne Rice; I know she isn't everyone's cup of tea, but I've adored her books since I was fourteen years old. By the time I was a sophomore in high school I had devoured over half the VC series.

My other favorite writers are:
JK Rowling
Lewis Carroll
Holly Black
Amelia-Atwater Rhodes
Edgar Allen Poe
Thomas Harris
Hunter S. Thompson
Emily Brontë
Jane Austen
Libba Bray
Washington Irving

...plus many more. And do playwrights count? Because I'm a Shakespeare junkie.

Fyodor Dostoyevsky is my favorite by far with The Brothers Karamazov or Crime and Punishment being his best works in my opinion. If I had to pick one it would be him.

John Irving has been my favorite author since I read "A Prayer for Owen Meany" over ten years ago. It is still my all time favorite book. He followed and cemented his spot on my list with "The World According to Garp" and "The Fourth Hand" and then "158 Pound Marriage". All wonderful books. However, he is in threat of losing his top spot after I read "Until I Find You". I'm waiting on his newest release due out this October. We'll see if it bumps him down or not.

My reflex Number 2 is Augusten Burroughs. I loved "Running With Scissors", "Dry", "Magical Thinking" and even "Sellevision". But I hated "Possible Side Effects" and "A Wolf at the Table". I think he's about to get bumped down a few notches because I don't think I can stomach any more disappointments from him.

I love Emily Giffin as well. She is insightful, smart, romantic, but also serious and discusses real topics. Her characters are very REAL. ["Baby Proof", "Love the One You're With" and "Something Blue"] [HATED "Something Borrowed"]

And my new one is Katherine Marple. I read "Okay" and found it inspiring, brave and very lyrical. I've only read this one book, but I have her other one "Wretched (this is my sorry)" on order. If "Wretched" is also very well written, I will push her in Augusten's spot. We'll see what happens.

I think my favourite author would have to be Colleen McCullough. The research she does for her novels is amazing. Read her Rome series and it is almost like you are there. :D

SO HARD TO PIN DOWN. THOSE THAT I LOVE HAVE MOVED ME, ENRICHED ME, TOOK ME TO PLACES YET TO BE DISCOVERED (OR LONG SINCE DEAD), LIFTED, COMFORTED, OR SOMEHOW CHANGED ME.

THIS WOULD INCLUDE MANY FOR MANY REASONS. I WOULD HAVE TO INCLUDE SHAKESPEARE, NEAL STEPHENSON, WILLIAM GIBSON, TONY MORRISON, ALICE WALKER, ZORA NEALE HURSTON, ORSON SCOTT CARD, MICHAEL CRICHTON, CALEB CARR, BRUCE STERLING, H.P.LOVECRAFT (XENOPHOBIC MISANTHROPE ASIDE), ANNE RICE (EARLY DAYS), J.K. ROWLING, AND DR. SEUSS. THE LIST IS FAR TOO SHORT TO INCLUDE EVERYONE. I JUST RAN OUR OF TIME.
