I have a big handful of them and it all depends on my mood just who is the number one favorite.

Diana Gabaldon
Jane Austen
Philippa Gregory
Larry McMurtry
James A. Michner

Dan Brown because his stories are flawless till the end, the plot is always very organized and well-knitted.
Meg Cabot because she writes about day to day life and about a regular ordinary person.
J K Rowling has to be in the list. I really admire her imagination. Her imagination is endless for sure.
Last but not the least I would definitely mention Stephenie Meyer because only she can think above the ordinary, she made people love and believe in a story which was not even anyone's wildest imaginations.

Jane Austin and Water Farley were my favorite when I was kid. Today, I like Nickles Sparks. I like the passion that he brings to his stories.

I have to say, Chuck Palahniuk (Fight Club, Choke, Survivor) is one of my favorite authors because he says things no mainstream author would dare try to get away with. I love his early work, but his later work--especially Tell All--has seemed to have fallen short of his earlier genius. Anybody have a favorite Palahniuk book? My first was Survivor, my favorite is still Fight Club.
