Yes. I have been a huge Laurell K. Hamilton fan for about 10 years now but her last book "Kiss the Dead" just left me feeling flat and unsatisfied. The book read like a fanfiction rather than atypical Anita Blake book. I was heartily disappointed and still not sure if I will risk another of her books.

OMG yes! Karen Robards' The Last Victim. So not her usual, and not what I was looking for.

Yes. Dean Koontz is one of my favorite Authors. I read "the Darkest Evening of the Year," and I seriously couldn't believe how it ended. I swear, he was 3/4 of the way through the manuscript when his publisher said, "Time's up, hand in your work," and so he just forked it over unfinished. Instead of explaining all these crazy things that happened, he just poses questions like, "what did happen?" and "how did they survive?" What the...?

I absolutely love Sophie Hannah and had found all her books spine-chilling. In comparison, although I thought it was really well written and had great atmosphere, I thought the twist in her new book "Kind of Cruel" was kind of a disappointment.

I love Jeffrey Archer. He's one of the best story tellers out there. His stories may not be so novel, but the way he carried the plot forward was brilliant. But he started repeating plots from his old books and quite literally broke my heart. :'(

One of my favorite authors when I am in the mood for a good mystery with some romance and unexpected twists would be Nora Roberts. Oh she just has that way of getting me hooked! There was one series that I was so addicted to reading one after the other that when it came to reading the last book I just couldn't do it because I was so turned off of how much of the previous books she was repeating. And, I never finished that book. I understand where having some summation of the previous books would still invite a reader who hasn't read the previous ones to purchase and read it. I still love reading her books, just tend to shy away from ones that she has in a series.

There have been a few authors that come to mind who have disappointed me at some point. This has because I didn't like the ending or they stopped the series before I felt that it had finished.

I don't have one particular favourite author - I have a whole bunch of them, and yes, some of definitely disappointed me! I agree with the earlier post about the Scarpetta books by Patricia Cornwall; similarly Kathy Reichs' later books have been hit and miss in my opinion. Even John Grishom has disappointed me. A friend of mine has a theory that it is all the fault of the publishing houses, who provide upfront millions, then make unreasonable demands, so that an author is left to churn out mediocre stories just to earn their keep! Anyway, I guess I take the good with bad, although a couple of "bads" will definitely affect whether or not I purchase another book by that author. I also pay more attention to reviews than I used to - on sites like "Good Reads" , "Amazon" and this one.

Definitely. I love J.M. Coetzee, but some of his books ('Foe' and 'Elizabeth Costello' come to mind) seem like they must have been written by someone other than the man who wrote 'Disgrace' and 'Waiting for the Barbarians.'

Two authors I think never had a letdown are Richard Ford and John Steinbeck. To me, everything they write/wrote is equally amazing.

My thought on this topic might be a little controversial, but it is what it is: I don't feel it's my right to be "disappointed" in an author's work. Sure, I may not love one of their books as much as the others, but that's just personal opinion. My reaction to a particular book probably has a lot to do with what was going on in my life at the time I read it. (I mean, hey - a book I read while relaxing at the beach is often going to seem a lot better than one I read in short bursts during a hectic month when I'm worried about making rent.)

Stephen King - my favorite - is one who seems to "disappoint" readers quite often. I, for one, loathed The Tommyknockers the first time I read it. Just thought it was utter poop. But years later, and after re-reading, I don't feel that way about it anymore. And while I can pick some favorites out of King's works, I don't think I am disappointed in anything he's written. If it were always the same, it wouldn't be worth reading. And I think it's beautiful to consider the different mindsets/moods an author was in at the times they wrote different books.

Just MHO. Even if I don't love a book here or there, once I respect an author, my admiration remains pretty constant.

Absolutely, many authors have dissapointed me at one time or another. I think this happens most often when I do not leave enough time in between reads of a certain auther. The best example I can give is with James Patterson. He has so many books that come out so frequenlty and for a while I was behind because of school and work, so I read them all consecutively in the span of a month or so. Yuck! I feel like he is such a formula writer that they all started to sound the same. Most recently though, Charlaine Harris really dissapointed me with the last book of the Southern Vampire Series, what a crappy ending to a beloved series.
